Don't give me that nonsense. Older guys had to put up with mystery control schemes because the devs decided to be creative and have no standards so without the manual you would be SoL. Even for extremely simple games on something like the atari or commodore, you couldn't trust the joystick.

When I played GoldenEye one time in my life I set the controls up in almost twin stick fashion because it was the only way that made sense and I slaughtered all my friends who played all day. That's what intuitive means.

Not really.
It was just the first to realize that using an inadequate control scheme required compensation. If Super Mario 64 had just made guesses as to which direction you wanted to move with Dpad to boost its 8 directional resolution instead of using the analog stick, then people wouldn't be praising it for solving 3D platformers on consoles.
If they wanted you to play a console shooter in a way that feels good to play, then they should have used a keyboard and mouse or just waited until a controller came out that is actually good at navigating 3D space.

I played Duke Nukem 64, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as a kid on N64. The controls were dogshit. When I played dual analogue, it felt a million times better. Never once did I think "wow this is terrible and awkward, unlike using the face buttons with my right hand to move, and the analogue stick in my left hand to aim"
