I used to believe the theory that 06 suffered from having to release an "outdated build" because the most progressed build hadn't been properly polished. But having learned more about game dev and "finaling" I understand why it ended up as it did. Here's what was changed from demos/trailers to release
>Sonic only has 1 animation instead of 3 after homing attacks
>The rotation between springs and curves is not "smooth"
>The blur is downgraded
>Chain jumps have 1 animation instead of a series of animations per jump
>Less bones have IK or jiggle
I have a cousin who works on GTA VI and he says they're at a stage right now where they optimize by, for example, simplify or blend off edges of animation for memory and CPU load.
06 doesn't run well, neither on Xbox 360 or PS3, and they probably didn't have time to alter and re-export the level geomitry (to downgrade the polygon count for instance, due to collision risks) so their choice was to take what they had, downgrade animations to get more RAM headroom on both consoles to maybe go from average 38fps to 42fps. But this also meant all the latest levels were tested without motion smoothing, which can be seen in the first level where Sonic aligns with the boost pads but with the code restoration the smoothing causes Sonic to get misaligned. In earlier completed levels, the motion smoothing restores Sonic's alignment with obstacles.

So there's a lot of signs that the project wasn't fully incompetent. But between changes in test-setup late, due to the bad performance and haphazard optimization attempts, they enshittified early completed levels while improving recently completed levels.

The game was definitely unfinished but it's not as embarrassing as "Haha, Sonic Team didn't even know how to make a 3D game."

Playing Sonic Rush for the first time was like "What is the point of this platformer, you just hold right and everything happens on its own??"
But after a while you realize it's about optimizing your path and speed. You can round off loops and skip parts of slops with jumps at the right velocity, so that you don't slow down by following the curve of the slope all the way. Along the way you can jump into as many enemies as you dare, and make air-tricks in every jump to bump the score. Then you get D to S in rank at the end and that's where Sonic becomes fun.

The rush of the speed, the awesome music, creates a satisfying "performance-platformer". It's a bit like playing Dark Souls vs playing Devil May Cry. Or just other Hack & Slash vs DMC. Because DMC is a "Style-action game". It rewards style and how you perform through the game's levels, so the act of going from A to B isn't something especially thought provoking, but the act of trying to make your gameplay as "cool as possible" on your way there is rewarded in points.

And the more a Sonic game leans into that, the better then Sonic game it usually is. It's that, and being a collectathon, really. But the difference between Mario and Sonic is that Sonic has emphasis on coolness. It's just a shame that Sega hasn't adhered to that philosophy in the more recent games, but it was back in style in Shadow Generations.

That's nice. The game was released in alpha state since beta was less stable and it was rushed out for a christmas release by execs, despite sonic team's usual incompetence they were really the victims in all this.

I worked in QA and I'd report bugs that would get fixed just for the fix to bring old bugs back and it happened multiple times through development. I kinda just assumed last minute fixes on 06 probably fucked up the game in a similar way

Just keeping it to platformers I've played all the best Marios and I liked DK Bananza. I've played Conker's Bad Fur Day, and all those PS2 mascot platformer games. And 06 still has a soft spot.
I remember Rayman 3's marketing getting me excited to get a PlayStation 2 as a child. It was made to be "cool". Sonic 06 may have had the cringe trailers with Elise and Sonic having a "romantic" theme, but everything else looked sick. The game being a technical disaster took me off guard but ultimately it's still a game with the same sense of "ambition" as I would feel from a Rayman 3D game, where it feels like they take their mascot seriously. Even Mario has a bit of an edge to it in games like Mario 64 and Odyssey, and I like that about it. And certain levels in 06 do evoke a sense of wonder, like Crisis City and Kingdom Valley. It's the Hub Worlds and Silver's levels that basically ruins the game.

that's not a theory, that's a fact, the xbox demo build was a beta build but all the rest of the zones were too crash-prone so they shipped the more stable alpha build with pre-backed physics and cut a lot of things. The rest of your post is pure fanfiction buddy

I'm not convinced because the Xbox demo build had more collission bugs than the final version, and it had a lot of restored animations/features, which might be directly tied to some of that increased instability. It's very likely they were iterating on the mechanics after that build and introduced a ton of new glitches.

Either way it's not that different from the released game. The differences are minor, and the graphics having better shaders is just because all builds seen before that demo were just running on powerful PCs, so all the "PS3 demonstrations" was the game running on a GTX 7800 or something. The reason the PS3 port was delayed for several months is because they had to create an entirely different shader library because PlayStation doesn't have DirectX. Ultimately both console ports have downgraded visuals from their initial PC (faked console demo) builds.
