Also by making it objective based they nerfed the T'au into the ground, prior to that they used to be MUCH more powerful.

Thing about ranged combat in any strategy is the action economy. Ranged units have a better action economy because not only can they attack several times before the enemy is in range, but in a formation they can also often shoot over each other if arranged correctly so you can have a several rows deep firing line, while in melee only the frontrow units can fight. So while only SOME of the melee units can attack at once, ALL ranged units are able to attack at the same time.

Granted it's a bit of a "critical mass thing" of an army having to be big enough that there are actually multiple lines of ranged and melee units.
