what went wrong?

zero support and the support it got was greedy

I like it

The 2D/3D split was half assed because making a full moveset for each phase was never going to happen and that harmed the game as a whole.
I still enjoyed it greatly, but it needed a lot more work to pull off what it was trying to do.

I played competitively (and still would if I had time)

It was a decent success, but as far as what limited it from doing better:

>Teased multiple years before release, killed mometum
>Released on Wiiu late in lifespan, held back patches/DLC for switch release
>Marketed as a casual arena fighter (even tho it wasn't), so it turned the FGC off; then casuals got turned off by it not having a bazillon modes and copy pasted characters and it actually requiring them to git gud
>Even in game the more complex mechanics like how Phase shift points/the PSP guage, the height system etc are barely explained or aren't conveyed at all, as if trying to hide it's own depth
>inherently small cross section of pokemon fans and the FGC
>barely any marketing in general, just character announcements
>Almost zero support for third party FGC majors, support entirely got pulled within a year for them by TPCI even if Frosty Faustings, CEO,and other majors still continued to run it for years (some still do today)
>Most Pokemon World series tournaments for it got sectioned off to a separate Pokken channel on twitch instead of the main Pokemon one
>Locals require 2 games, 2 consoles, and 2 displays, and with a console many locals won't have due to most FGC titles being on PS
>Game's evo debut was super soon after release, nobody in the scene knew what they were doing yet, smash caused it to run overtime and the FGC blamed pokken then for going overtime; narrowly missed the 2017 fundraiser slot
>DX got announced when people were wanting Stars, people got pissed
>DX seemed like it might get actual marketing/event support since Nintendo Vs esports stuff became a thing, nothing really came of it

tl;dr poor marketing and dev support for it's competitive scene

ran out of space

It's not even that the idea itself is bad, just that it was odd choice to use it on a franchise where one of the big draws should be a decently large roster.

Cont:

As far as the actual issues in the game itself, not much, it's a fantastic neutral heavy competitive fighting game. Only major things i'd change would be to make the PSP gauge visible in the UI, and remove light hit armor in burst, alongside a few smaller tweaks like maybe making the focus/counter attacks less safe on block and maybe adding EX specials that use meter.

I'd really love Pokemon stadium style minigames so it has more replay value for casuals and in party settings, and to help teach fighting game concepts, since most of the minigames in the Stadium games deal with quick reaction speeds, precise timing, pattern recognition etc anyways, so you could use them to teach about making punishes and reads, timing and spacing combos etc.

Except the 3d phase isn't trying to be a whole even half of the game's combat: Notice how in the 2d phase, you have to fill the (hidden) phase shift gauge with a full combo or even multiple combos, wheras in the 3d phase, any heavy hit or most specials instantly causes a phase shift.

The 3d phase is basically a glorified extra layer of neutral, with 2d > 3d shifts acting as an anti infinite system that forces a return to neutral (though the player that causes the shift does get some advantage/can set up a bit)

As different moves add more or less PSP (or can even reduce or reset it) you're ideally wanting to alter your combo routes based on the situation: If going for optimal damage you change your route so whatever the gauge is at your high damage ender will land right on the shift so the combo isn't interupted. Or you can go for low PSP combos that do less damage up front but keep the enemy in the 2d phase/corner, where it can act as a combo reset or just allows you to set up with buffs. Or you can go for higher PSP combos that shift extra early if you really want to get back to the 3d phase or to get the meter from causing a shift.

Shifting is a good mechanic, just poorly explained in game

>pokemon game with no pokegirls
>it is completely forgotten
crazy that

It actually does have Pokegirls, but so few people give a shit that most of the human characters don't even have bulbapedia articles

Here's two though

I'm a pokefag that doesn't otherwise play fighting games but I thought it was pretty fun desu. Played garchomp in the original and gardevoir in the port, bit of scizor. Pokemon look good, very lively animations and has a cool touch of "realism" without going grotesque Detective Pikachu mode
But pokefags were put off by not including their favorite pokemon and FGCfags seemed put off by the phase shift mechanic so it is what it is

She had cute outfits too. Shame there doesn't seem to be a collection that includes her DLC outfits

no rollback and originally released on a dead console that was a pain to set up at tournaments
