>Played it just for more Maya Fey interactions
The official "sequels" on 3DS could fuck right off when this absolute kino exists.

Ruined by the ending

It gets a little messy, but if you've played any of the first 3 Layton games (especially the second one) the twist is exactly as "laytony", in that, for all the foreshadowing they did, it still seems very arbitrary. And what I like about this one, that even Layton 3 didn't quite nail, is it was given the Shu Takumi treatment, so after the mindrapingly stupid twist the follow-up where characters confess to each other and unpack the why and how, they stick the landing better, because of the familial bonds between them, and traumatic experiences they shared etc.

The ending cutscene was pretty weird though. When the bells ring it feels like it just contradicted itself.

A game that could have been fucked up at multiple points in development. Like look at pic related they thought of making Layton a fucking robot first before deciding "Hey lets just make him a little taller" But god bless them man they made a great fucking game, and its influence even went on to GAA with dealing with a whole jury mechanic

IMO it's all the power of Takumi (and some of his cohorts). Takumi has good taste and is proof that having good taste matters. Level-5 did do a lot of things on the project that made Takumi so stressed out he became avoidant in the final months of development, but for most of it they really wanted it to have his authorship, and it shows IMO. A lot of the basic story setup feels unusual even for a Layton title, and with TGAAC you can tell that Takumi was in a mode of asking "what's that?" about the world and its details and that started with this game when he came up with the witch trials.

I tried replaying this and got mega filtered at the first trial, maybe that trial gets better later but its insanely boring.
Capcom WILL find a way to remaster this instead of making AA7.

i liked a lot the great ace attorney games
i agree that dual destinies and spirit of justice were ass though
layton games have been ass for a LOOOOONG time, and i have no trust modern level 5 could pull it off today, either

The first trial feels a lot like a baby's first Ace Attorney case and the characters also feel a bit dumbed down, like the name puns are even more straightforward than normal. "Johnny Smiles" (because he literally smiles?) for instance.

Once you're in the other "dimension" you have more unfolding narratives as part of the trials. They still have that self-indulgency of Shu Takumi's scripts where maybe a "funny character" interrupts the case for way too long and it starts getting fucking obnoxious, but then you still go "aaah, that's why he was there" when you find the twist. And then the subsequent witch trials weave in with the narrative of the former cases. But in truth, only the first and second witch trials are great. The last batch of trials suffer from pacing problems and a lot of plot destruction. Because Takumi didn't work as much on them so they outsourced it to one of the Dual Destinies scriptwriter-for-hires.

I actually adore the more AA-styled Layton and wouldn't have minded at all if the game leaned in that direction, but I also appreciate that they didn't either. It was a really good game.

Never played this game but am a fan of both franchises. Please tell me it has some retarded plot twist at the end like Layton usually does
>>
>>730717002
It's retarded alright. Give it a try.

>like the name puns are even more straightforward than normal. "Johnny Smiles" (because he literally smiles?) for instance.
There was a period after the Western release's success got back to them that names were just kind of shit for a while. Like, "Noodle Guy" and "Romaine Lettuce".

>>730717002
It's very similar to the twist in Layton 2. Every bit as "what the fuck are you serious?" retarded.
But the writing throughout is a lot better than a normal Layton game because it was written by the writer of the first Phoenix Wright games, so the dynamic of Phoenix and Maya is captured perfectly. The localization was done by NoE though, so the way they write some things feels a bit different. In Japanese they had the screen actors from the Ace Attorney film do Phoenix and Maya's voices so that probably affected the writing a little bit. I like the voices they got for them in the english dub though. Maya just sounds like a "girl", it's not even animeified. Phoenix also sounds like a guy who might be a lawyer. It's exactly how they always kinda sounded to me when I played the DS games, and not the overdone California tier "anime dub" acting they got in the other 3DS games.

They were still always kind of creative though. Olivia Al Dente is too obvious, like "Yeah, her name is olivia because of her heritage and al dente because it's a cook get it." Romaine Lettouce is just kind of random but it sounds like some baltic dude. Noodle Guy was "Guy Eldoon" and there was a whole thing in that case about the mirroring of the word "Noodle" because his noodle stand was retarded, so that made it kinda funny.

But in the first trial of PLvAA there's just a feeling that it's really really plain, probably because it's Nintendo translating it and they like to make things obvious to toddlers.

The music at important moments is fkn tight, but some of the common tracks get repetitive. This was the first time the ace attorney characters were in 3D, and they look good, except phoenix is a little derpy at the defense table. But remember, most of the game plays out outside court. Nice waifus, the prosecutor husbando seems popular. Nice supporting characters,- if you liked dragon quest 8 you should 100% try this game. The problem is the core mechanics! The cases are iffy and the layton puzzles are almost all lame! They should have been willing to bring out some real difficulty by the end, the only puzzle series i liked was the "laser table" one where you flip mirrors and then have to slide a cocktail to the end of the bar. But the thing is- Im not trying to rag on it, I really liked the game anyway. Wonderful sense of adventure. It has a fanfic's love for the characters but it can back it with the skill of professionals. Good game, btw If you guys didn't get the dlc you can still find it online, it is just some art and some little talkies but it has edgeworth so theres that.

I miss when we used to get dedicated crossover games like this or Project X Zone. Now it’s all fighting game guests or battle pass skins in a GAAS.
>>
>>730717910
Don't forget that zoomers will defend the latter because "it's just like action figures"!
Action Figures weren't bound to a soulless game that's probably just shooting.
>>
>>730715493
I loved the DLC that let you see all the makings off with all its dumb jokes.
I also think it had the best voiced Edgeworth in all of AA history, even if it was just for one scene.
>>
>>730716876
That's because it is designed to be baby's first AA case in case you came in from the Layton side of gaming.

I like for one reason. It's finally case that isn't a murder and unlike 3-2, doesn't turn into a murder.
>>
>>730717910
Project X Zone 3 pls...
>>
>>730715493
It was nice but the ending was shit (like most layton game). It didn't have any epic moment, i would say its similar to ace attorney 2 in term of writing ... but definitively inferior to your avg layton/ace attorney game

Surprised it didn't sell much tho, its not "good" but its decent enough to buy and play. Lot of cool mechanic, godlike soundtrack
>>
>>730715493
They can fuck right off anyways, but thank you for reminding me I have this game
>>
>>730717024
God-tier Layton twist levels of dumb, but in the best way. Like you’ll be yelling “no fucking way” at your screen while mashing A through some of the most straight-faced nonsense ever written. If you liked any of Layton’s “everyone was wearing masks for 20 years” type plot bombs, this’ll be your jam.
>>
>>730721103
I played only the original Layton trilogy, and also Katrielle, and I'm rather mad at 3. Layton leaving the party and fucking solving the mystery off screen is not how you do a mystery story. Horrible.
