When exactly did pc games start using wasd for controls and mouselook? They both seem obvious in retrospect.
>>
How are the arrow keys not "obvious" for movement?

Quake
>>

They're a lot more akwardly positioned compared to wasd
>>

Seems like something you can google

About the same time they start using the mouse to look around. The first doom was keyboard only, you couldnt even look up or down.

Doom actually

Mice weren't as common on DOS

You'd still use arrow keys for movement in Doom afaik,

This is a very well documented history actually:
One pro Quake player came up with it in the late 90s, and posted it on forums.

Soon after, it was already the default in games like Half-Life.

Yes, DOOM was still played using Arrows.
I still do play DOOM the oldschool way, keyboard only:

>Arrows move
>hold ALT to strafe
>CTRL shoots
>Space use/open
>Shift to spring / CAPS to always run

In Duke 3D and such, it was the same deal + PageUP/DOWN to look up/down, which was paired with auto-center feature that activated after a few steps.

As I recall, it was a particular player who started using WASD and got success with it (as opposed to arrow keys and so on) and so games afterwards started including WASD as a default or optional default, and it picked up momentum from there. It might've been a Quake player, but I don't exactly remember who started it with which game.

I'm more of a esdf guy anyways!

ESDF makes more sense than wasd
>>
>>730726469
No. ESDF makes your pinky awkwardly positioned.
>>
>>730725263
I remember hearing this story as well. Never fact checked it though.
>>
>>730722293
The default controls for Quake were still arrow keys. Looking Up and down were done with page up and page down.
>>
>>730727162
No it doesn't. Grow some normal hands.
>>
>>730727337
Post a picture of your hand on ESDF

QWEX master race, pinky on the tab
