Why is Demon's Souls largely considered a masterpiece?
>>
got a lot of right the first time and only minor improvements to the formula have been made since
same applies for OOT

Felt immersive to play. The game is hard but its easy and inviting to get into that hard ecosystem and the game lets you do what you want to figure it out. In a time when everything was defaulting to being too handholdy it went the other way and people liked that.
>>
really nothing like it at the time. Was refreshing as fuck to play as handholding got really big and the only other non JRPG fantasy was pretty lackluster

It was copium from snoys after dark souls got popularity. They do it all the time, just look what was with rdr before the PC port

It was like a huge middle finger to the rampart "casual gaming" boom that had started a few years prior, completely alienating the original "hardcore" gamer audiences, also resulting decline of overall quality of vidya.

DeS was practically the first "You should be able to solve this.BMP" in a game form. A new, next-gen game, made for those who grew up playing Battletoads and Diablo.

Such unpatronizing and varied experiences are still a rare treat.

Easy peasy 4K / 60fps on a 10 year old higher-mid tier hardware. Literally.

Because it invented a lot of the "Dark Souls Formula". It actually is the best depiction of a post-apocalyptic Dark Fantasy universe I can think of. They did it the best in Demon's Souls. There is no strange esoteric lore told by cryptic NPCs. No.

You know what is going on. Boletaria was the crown jewel of Human achievement, but it has been covered by a demonic fog, which slowly spreads and will eventually cover the entire world, if not stopped. You can see the armies, which tried to stop the fog in the loading screens and concept art. THAT already happened. The good guys already tried to form a huge coalition, create a huge army and assault Boletaria. They were defeated. You can also see the dead corpses of previous adventurers everywhere, who came before you and tried to stop it. This is a defeated fantasy world, which already went through the apocalypse.

I never quite got that feeling from any other Dark Souls game. In DeS you are not the "Chosen One". There is no prophecy. You are just another adventurer. Only after you have slain a Demon regained your body after being brought to the Nexus, does the Shrine Maiden pay any attention to you. But that is just the start. You need to do a lot more Demon Slaying, until you are told about the endgame she and the Monumental have in mind. But by that point you have already leveled up so much, gotten so much benefits from the soul art, the characters are alluding to the fact you are basically something like a Demon already too. It happened organically through gameplay. And that is just lore. I haven't talked at all about the interesting and diverse environments you are visiting. What also helps is that the game doesn't put a bonfire everywhere. You need to actually explore and you KNOW you will only get another bonfire or archstone, if you kill a boss. I like that. That aspect is lost with Dark Souls 2 and only came back in the first Dark Souls 2 DLC, at least for me, because I missed a bonfire and had to dungeon crawl.

Effortlessly, at way higher fps and resolution, if you have a CPU made these past 6 years or so and a decent GTX card.
The native 720p / 30fps is probably easily doable even on a mobile iGPU these days.

You could argue the same for ringing the bells in dark souls. It was basically just a shittest to see who might potentially be powerful enough to kill the lords

I hate americoons so much it's actually unreal. they are like a soul-sucking force that is debasing humanity and dumbing it down to a lower, more animalistic plane of existence.
