Would you prefer to be in command of a smaller spacecraft with a handful of crew you all personally know or a bigger capital-sized ship with hundreds of crewmen and all the logistical responsibilities that come with it?Also space games thread
>>730730580I've always been eager to play a space game where you fly in fuck huge capital ships. Never really enjoyed the space dog fighting thing. Unfortunately it's fairly rare for it to be a viable play style even for games it's in. Star sector is the best one I know of where big ships are very viable.
>>730730725Being in a large ship necessitates that you are part of an organized military force for crew and logistics. Smaller ships are more common since it makes story sense for them to be free agents so the player can do what they want.
>>730730725You should try Rebel galaxy.Sequel unfortunately went full dogfight though.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tCzWom8uEE
>>730730580Starshatter let's you play both
>>730730725I remember playing the demo of this at one point and I found it pretty fun but it's still not out unfortunately.
>>730730916Thats fine. The X games have you start in one character shuttles, for the basic starts anyway, and build up to be able to hire large crews for big ships. Flying huge ships in those games is pretty dicey but it makes sense enough.
I want ships so big that nobody on the bridge is even aware of the fact that there has been a violent mutiny going on for weeks on some forgotten shithole part of the ship
>>730730948Rebel Galaxy is an absolute piece of shit game, I can't even understand how it ever got a sequel to begin with.
>>730730580A X-Box size ship so I can double as a captain and city mayor. Obviously played as city builder.
>>730730580>Also space games threadMy cockpit is ready.
>>730730580I like being one person in a small ship that's so fucking fast I don't even need weaponry.
>>730730580Capital ships all the way.
>>730731667It sold just well enough to make a profit for the developers that made it. Pretty basic stuff financially.
>>730730580Tiny crew in a huge ship. It's the freighter life for me.
>>730731914why don't pilots just use a keyboard? wtf is the point of all this random shit
>>730732453Basedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSB4Uo3xG-I
>>730730580>bigger capital-sized ship with hundreds of crewmen and all the logistical responsibilities that come with it?This one. I want all the men under my command to faceless grunts wearing cool uniforms. I could care less about quirky companions and girlboss romances.
>>730730948love this game, sid meier's pirates in space with blues saraceno as backing tracks, lacking in boarding actions unfortunately but what can you do. simple, to the point, fun
>>730730580>a bigger capital-sized ship with hundreds of crewmen and all the logistical responsibilities that come with it?name five games
>>730730580I want both. I want a Firefly inspired space western focused on a small crew making their way through space, but with space travel actually playing a major part in the gameplay. Games either have detailed characters and awful space travel, or detailed space mechanics and awful and generic companions or crew.I also want a capital ship game that successfully blends cool space combat and ship management. Battlestar galactica would be my example here.
>>730732575Flight controls need variable amounts of input. The rest is just role playing like pilots. Though I suppose having some of the stuff light up indicating their own status also helps. Some flight and space sims get in depth about which systems are actually on and off, and do factor in to how much power is available for other things.
>>730730725There's Angels Fall First
>>730730580I'm at that point in X3 Albion Prelude where it's non-stop capital ship battles for plot reasons. Fucking sucks, I like it most in X games where you're just one dude in a fighter with a factory or two producing food or energy.
>>730733127I understand that enthusiasts are just role playing, and that it reflects real cockpits. What I'm more wondering is in real life, what is the utility of having all of those knobs and buttons, rather than just having a central console with a keyboard. for example, throttle up, throttle down.. You could easily just use page up/down, or manually type figures in if you need something more exact.. same for toggling weapons, or radar settings, etc, or paging through telemetric data for the plane.
>>730733053Repton, Call of duty, Mario Party, Subnautica and Infra Arcana.
>>730730580how about a bigger capital-sized ship with several smaller sized ships. That would make it rad
>>730733553In real life most controls are analog and physically move things on the plane when you use them. It's important because it gives better physical feedback on how the plane's handling, and there's less stuff to potentially go wrong.
>>730733662i see, interesting. That makes sense then
>>730730580There hasn't been a good capital ship sim since Bridge Commander.
>>730732575>why don't pilots just use a keyboard? In the future they will. You are talking about drones, right? pic related
>>730734230That chair looks pretty fuckin comfy
>>730734230Yeah that looks more like what I would imagine a modern cockpit to look like, but even if you look at F22 cockpits they don't look like this at all
>>730734452*keyboard wire gets damaged mid-flight*Whoops there goes your entire aircraft
>>73073437824/7 operator chaircosts at least $2000the cleaning lady is standing by with a wet disinfect towel when your shift ends and the next guy's shift starts to wipe the leather as quickly as possible and minimize turnover
>>730734562>wire to throttle gets damagedWHOOPS
>>730734895*pitches up to slow down**pitches down to speed up**pulls the engine fuel shutoff to stop the engines**extends flaps for drag**extends landing gear for drag*A lot of things you can still do with no throttle. Can't say the same for a digitally controlled plane.
>>730735017>*pitches up to slow down*>*pitches down to speed up*Captain, we are in outer space.
>>730734895>>730735017Also each individual engine has their own thrust lever. You'd need them all to break to fuck your plane's throttle.

>>730734634if I ask nice will she give me a handjob while I establish greater israel?
>>730730580>small ship with crew or big ship with crewI want a freelancer remake. Surely it cannot be that expensive to make.
>>730735106If you read up further, the discussion is about planes
>>730731914sweet setup
>>730734895I imagine those wires are made to be quite a bit beefier because of their importance. But also planes or jets with multiple engines can fly with just one. Even commercial airlines can glide with no thrust whatsoever, just very much not ideal. That Hudson River landing years ago was proof of that. For jets in particular I think the F18 has engines on it so powerful they technically don't need wings to fly, it's more of a rocket with flight controls. Whereas the F16 is so nimble a pilot managed to dodge like 6 surface to air missiles by pure rolling and shit alone, his flares bugged out. Aviation history is kind of wild.
>>730735183There is no UP in space, but there is a BOTTOM.
>>730735167Play Underspace
>>730736365The only game which sort of feels like freelancer was everspace2 but the ships look like legos and it doesn't treat itself seriously>underspaceI saw the giant space serpent/worm and noped out, i don't want fantasy shit in my scifi space game. It's sort of sad that there's no microsoft to rein in Roberts, so he's off into deep space chasing space whales with other people's mortgages.
>>730736142F15* not F18.
Flying capital ships is boring. You're not maneuvering, you're just transporting 3000 souls to the edge of weapons range and pressing a button to launch long range weapons, then watch a blip on the computer screen go from blinking to confirmed kill.
>>730736884>want fantasy shit in my scifi space game. The nomad parts of freelancer were the best parts and that shit had no fucking basis in reality
