Steam got popular because it was basically the first real online PC game store, which made things ridiculously easy.Before steam, if you weren't specifically close to a store that sold the game you wanted you'd have to import it, and you'd have to find someone who would import it in the first place. I don't even need to say how expensive that would be outside of the main american cities.
