I never found tank controls to be as bad as anyone says and RE1 is slightly older than I am. I think those people just don't feel like learning it. I can sympathize because I just hate parrying mechanics.

Fixed camera angles often give a better overview of a scene than first person or OTS, and the tank controls exist because they suit the fixed camera angles. That might be a reason why individual RE2R zombies are so dangerous compared to those in RE2 proper, because the idea of entering a room surrounded by 5-6 enemies and focusing your attention among all of them as well as where your character is going is much less reasonable with OTS. That kind of camera system isn't really the default choice for games designed around avoiding enemies.

So every time the camera flips perspective you have to rapidly change which way you're moving your character, even though this games are being played on stuff way stronger than a Gamecube. Either make tank control the default or just go with over-the-shoulder, shit.

At least Signalis just did perpetually overhead except for some first person segments, which simplified the process.

The indie SH scene is weird to me because there seem to be quite a few but everyone has a list of flaws for all of them, flaws which the classic RE games didn't suffer from, except for Signalis.
