subversion, as shorthand for the subversion of expectations, is best used when you want to either>break immersionor>make someone think about something meaningfullyIf you treat it like a plot twist, engaging setpiece, variety-increasing segment, or as bonus side-content, then it can be really fun. Nobody's ever really complained about a journal entry in an optional safehouse talking about how those bandits you just shot up in the room before were trying to leave the faction and were just putting on a charade, but I just saw that happen in a game I was playing earlier today. Nobody complains about plot twists like the villain being put against you by a so-called ally. Nobody really minds when you have an (optional) vehicle or stealth section in a game that you didn't expect it in, or if you get a new mechanic halfway through the game that's stuck in a certain area that breaks the standard rules for how you play (those are often well-beloved, even). But if you're pursuing it for the sake of doing so, then you're going to create frustration in people who don't mindlessly consume products. If you want to add in guns into a medieval fantasy setting, fine, but don't make it a modern military rifle and point out how wacky it is and make it a major plot point. Don't make the main villain secretly be gay for you and then have the good ending be you forgiving him and having gay sex. Don't have your setting be revealed to be a dream unless you have a damn good reason to do so... it's really not that hard, but the vast majority of designers and writers nowadays are nepo/esg/dei hires. So, there you go.
