I can decide not to save and test my skills, i can decide to save every few seconds or before and after every crucial point. I can save mid mission or combat and just stop, and then come back and proceed exactly where i stopped. Saving us but an easy mechanism, i know, i made some in my games. But i utterly despise checkpoints and any form of saves that don't respect my time to the point where i just don't play games that rely on checkpoints as a primary and sometimes only possible way of saving progress.
