Fellow high INT bros you buying anything?
>>730760038It's all games I've bought during winter sale or stuff on my wishlist
>>730760038Name one good detective game and then name 5.Bonus: not post mortem.
>>730760038I tried the demo for Blake Manor, didn't really like it. Felt paradoxically too gamey for me to get interested in the setting or story yet too narrativey to get interested in the game mechanics. Either set me loose with the mechanics and a bunch to investigate or give me a focused linear narrative, don't jerk me back and forth between the two.
I'm almost done with the Case of the Golden Idol. Cool game for 9 bucks but a bit short. I think it's like 4-5hrs long without dlcs.
>>730760513DLC is its own cool story about Albert Cloudsley's mentor who was even more scheming than him
>>730760513It inspired a bunch of copycats, which is a good thing if they are done well
>>730760038I bought the Kathy Rain bundle due to a friend telling me they're similar to the Gabriel Knight games. I'll probably play the first one over the weekend.
I'm a detective IRL and it fucking sucks. I thought it would be exciting and dangerous. Instead I'm tracking down deadbeat dads so their ex-wives can get his salary garnished.
I'm playing mystery of the malign and it's kinda a huge slog. You move super slow and there are way too many random clues
>We won't ever get another game like Hypnospace Outlaw
>>730761708shame the dev fumbled the sequel
>>730760892Besides Roottrees, what other copycats? I need more detective games, and "any port in a storm" or whatever.
>>730760910On Steam, a "detective game" can either mean "a game that requires an abstraction of detective work" (Obra Dinn, A Hand With Many Fingers) or "any random game where the character happens to be a detective" (Batman Arkham, The Wolf Among Us). Kathy Rain sits in the latter, because it's a traditional point and click adventure. Although one of the puzzles in KR2 is a good detective puzzle.
I like mysteries and I like puzzles but it seems pretty rare to execute the gameification of narrative deduction in a fun way. When they elevate past rudimentary procedure in service of storytelling, it's easy to reach a complexity of speculation that feels arbitrary and the process laborious in my experience.>>730761119I remember an anon claimed to be an insurance fraud investigator who said they spend a lot of time just sitting outside peoples houses to see if they're actually injured
>>730760892what about the blackwell series
>>730761180bro you're not a fan of detective games bro. are you just running around the level bro I guess you'd need to be white
>>730762015Roottrees is an obralike
>>730762290>>730762882How many people itt are here for detective games and how many are here for "detective games"?
>>730762882this but unironically
>>730760038Why is LiS not on sale reeeee
>>730760513i fucking loved golden idol 1+2, the DLC for 2 was my real GOTY for 2025
Best detective game is SS13. I had a detective round one time in which I had to find out who forcibly circumcised the clown. In this round, the AI had its laws rewritten. Law 0 was to decide whether or not to circumcise the clown based on science.
>>730760038Free shit: https://william-rous.itch.io/type-helpfun text game
>>730763820that's just the average day living in modern america
>>730762882If they didn't want me moving around they should've made the game one big menu
>>730761838I mean he's still making it right?
>>730761180https://store.steampowered.com/app/2575370/Wildwood_Down/Maybe this is more your speed
>>730764008I'm not taking recommendations from /v/ at this time.
>>730763935less immersive
Anyone played any of these?>Dinocop>Confidential Killings>Forest GroveIncidentally, they're intentionally really goofy and low stakes, but both Duck Detective games are good.
>>730761180I used the time walking around to brainstorm what is going on. Just use the inner monologue feature
>>730763941No it's cancelled
>>730764203i will probably buy confidential killings soon, havent seen gameplay tho
>>730764079Are you sure? I was sure you would be down to try it.
I'm considering Shadows of Doubt but a lot of people say the game is broken.
>>730764212I've been playing it for 5h straight, maybe I'll come back to it but it's honestly not very engaging.
>>730764415novel idea but RNG breaks literally everything. You'll hate it if you're a high IQ white person with standards. You'll love it if you're a normalfag.
>>730762965It's more like Her Story since it's about using a constrained search system.
>>730764008>Featuring a protagonist with Down Syndrome
>>730764415It's fun for your first case because you're not fully aware of underdeveloped the game is yet. Then it just makes you angry because of how much wasted potential there is.
>>730764347FUCK, that was at the top of my wishlist for years.
>>730764384>I was sure you would be down to try it.
>>730764559Average day for /v/
man, I wish window of perspectives would be released soon. I liked the demo but not enough to pay for early access.
Everything on my list is coming out in the future, but I've played a bunch of things in the last 6 months.Seance of Blake Manor - Detective game, but not really any meaningful deductions or puzzles. Decent story.Kathy Rain - I thought I'd give it a try even though I don't usually like point n click, and it's meh.Daemon Masquerade - Very indie deduction game, not super hard but I liked it for what it was.Chrono Quartz - Not really a deduction game but I think it might appeal to the same sort of peopleStrange Horticulture - Has "deduction" but is so trivially easy it barely counts. Haven't tried the sequelI haven't tried A Case of Fraud or Confidential Killings yet. Reviews for both kind of put me off of them.
>>730764441It's a game for people who love to autistically overanalyze stuff, schizoids who see connections everywhere, and maybe point and click fans. Kind of expected casuals would get exhausted by it
>>730762015Confidential Killings and Little Problems are two that are fully released and use the golden idol format of gather clues and then slot them into the answer. There are a bunch of ones still being made that have demos during Next fests.
>>730762553I played the first of them years ago and I remember it being a pretty dull and standard point and click adventure game
>>730764904>A Case of Fraud or Confidential KillingsBoth are very short. Confidential Killings gets a plus for atmosphere and artstyle. A Case of Fraud is poor man's Roottrees
>>730765003Their next game looks much more interesting to me, but maybe only because I had some ideas of creating a near-identical game and was very surprised to see someone else was basically already making ithttps://store.steampowered.com/app/4189100/Death_at_Sycamore_Hall/
>>730765113Huh that does look a hundred times more interesting. I didn't even know about it
Im yoo fucking dumb for deduction games
I bought the maid game because I like these types of adventure movie games
I did read it as "Defective Fest" at first glance and hoped Gabe would called out all devs who are trying to sell unfinished buggy shit
>>730760038more like defective test
Two words: Blue Prince sucks
>>730768463awful game, anyone shilling it deserves a beheading
Is there anything in the Steam version of Roottrees that makes it worth playing again if I already played the browser version years ago?
>>730764974They're ok, but I did enjoy their take on how ghosts work and stole it for my tabletop game setting.
>>730764904>Chrono Quartz - Not really a deduction game but I think it might appeal to the same sort of peopleI highly enjoyed this game. It's fairly short but it's pretty clever at times.
https://william-rous.itch.io/type-helpSomeone recommended this to me along with roottrees a while back
More people need to play On Your Tail
hows mystery of malign
>>730764918Confidential Killingsjust releasedhow is it
>>730770006slow and unengagingyou might like it if you like obra dinn, this is way longer but has horrible pacing
>>730770006required player participationwill filter you
>>730770110you said the same thing about Outer Wilds
>>730770110>>730770119the dev was here on v a year ago shilling his demo and asking for feedbackI told him to add a sprinting keyso he didn't listensad
>>730770006depends on who you askwhat games do you enjoy?
>>730760038>detective festMore like VN fest
>>730768919the original game is only half of the steam version, although the new stuff is harder and not quite as good. still worth playing though
not a detective game but it's an outer wilds clonehttps://store.steampowered.com/app/3816450/Amatsuko/
>>730770006It's very solid. Really enjoyed the attention to detail and being able to interrogate people about literally everything.
>>730770208I remember it having sprinting. I would have quit if it didn't
>>730768919they added a whole new campaign called roottreemania supposed to be harder
This thread reminds me that Adventure Gamers is dead. Yeah, Adventure Game Hotspot is all the former writers and editors, but Adventure Gamers was one of the oldest vidya review sites.
>>730770270kinooooooooooooooooo
>>730770110>slownigga what thread do you think you're instop ruining my favourite genre
>>730770586remove Blue Prince and Shadows of Doubt
>>730770529in the demo there was a lot of backtracking through huge empty areas while slow walkingdoesn't mean slowburn/slowpaced, just tedious
>>730770616no
>>730770636I'm starting to think you're not the target audience. Has anyone ever told you it's ok to stay away from genres you don't like? You're the whole reason why the fanbases got taken over by fags and women playing on their Steam decks
>>730770616>remove Blue Princefiltered
>>730770586The fuck is this? This is just a random assortment of games.
>>730770709Blueprints loses all of its cred since the other 3/4ths of the game are RNG for gambling plebs
>>730770759I love golden idol, roottrees, sam barlow, painscreek etcjust let me sprint goddamn
>>730761119dude, plenty of stories about PIs is always "man all I did as a detective is do dumb cases until one day a mysterious person came with my biggest case ever!"
Any cool videos hating and exposing blue prince that you can recommend?
>>730765329same. it sucks because I love them anyway but I always end up having to use guides so it's pointless.
>>730770905room RNG is the smallest part of the game once you reach room 46 twiceyou never reached it once so you wouldn't understand
I met the dev to Of the Devil last weekend. Didn't play the demo yet but they were at MAGfest, so that was cool
>>730770879genre: Figure 'Em Outssubgenre: Deduce 'Em Ups
>>730770951I liked Painscreek and the Witness and I never even once thought about that. Back in the day gaming taught us you gotta zone out. I don't know how it is today
>>730771098I never played itnot wasting 500 hours of my life on your gay slot machine
Anyone played Staffer Case? It has a demo which I intend to try but I don't tend to feel that demos for these sorts of games paint a good picture.
>>730771239oh you should have led off that you're a tranny and saved me the trouble of replying
>>730770905You can manipulate the RNG in Blue Prince. The fact people complain about the random room draws means they didn't play it enough to form an objective opinion about it.If you didn't find the throne, you didn't beat the game.
>>730771284Says the retard falling for the astroturfed journocasual slop of the year that has been stickied to every puzzle recommendation list on steam now
>>730760421Easy. All 35 Nancy Drew games
>>730771350I don't want rogueslop in my puzzle gaming
>>730771379I play games before forming opinions about them so I can't follow your stupid post sorry Stop letting what other people like dictate what you like you fucking sheep
>>730771170If The Witness is a "deduction game," then so is fucking Cut the Rope.
>>730771425You clearly don't want reading either because that post is three sentences and you couldn't even make it through that
>>730771174The ending of Painscreek was so bad that it soured the rest of the experience. I don't even remember how good the puzzle/deductive elements were, I just remember the really shit ending.
Detective games never caught my interest because 99% of the times it wither highlights the shit you need to find or its like a checklist and you can't move on until you see everything, which is just a walking simulator with more steps.Or worse yet are the ones that allow of anyone accused to be guilty so you are always right. Are there any games that do not fit this? All i can think of is Shadows of Doubt but thats more like a sandbox game
>>730760038Bought Return of the Obra Dinn, Case of the Golden Idol + DLC, Outer Wilds + DLC, Scene Investigators, and The Painscreek Killings.I was going to buy Roottrees Are Dead but figured you can play the "indie" version for free off itch.io and it can wait until it's on sale a little further.
>>730771667mystery of the malign is pretty nonlinear
>>730771382Hi Cleh we miss you
Bought this, never heard of it but has good reviews and looks soulful.
Shadow of Doubt has a cool premise of autismo simulation but the reviews say they botched it
>>730760038>Heavy Rain for $2Worth it or is it just a meme
>>730771840It's an early access game that came out of early access without doing anything to fix all the early access issues
>>730771840The devs gave up and cashgrabbed a console release. It's fun for a couple hours but becomes extremely formulaic once you know the killer archetypes you're dealing with
>>730769471
Ok /v/, I want to play a deduce 'em up game and/or a figure 'em out. As a total noob to this what are one or two I should buy?
>>730771861David Cage is a cuck fucking loser, do not give him 1 cent
>>730772495Start with Blade Runner (1997)
>>730771163I played through all chapters. Interesting game, worth playing but it's a mixed bag. Morgan is a great character, but I don't care for most of the others. The worldbuilding is very thorough, case writing and trial mechanics are all solid. It's too heavy on the lgbt pandering though, to the point I wonder how there's not a severe birthrate crisis.
>>730769471Not a furry but I'll play anything with good gameplay. How would you place it against other games mentioned in this thread?
>>730772495Return of the Obra Dinn and Case of the Golden Idol
Man Shadows of Doubt is such wasted potential
>>730771163Did you get any of the phone charms?
>>730773451nah, I tried to bumrush Sunday and just didn't really have my head on straight. MAGfest is amazing but do the indie room earlier than I did.
>>730768463I wish I could see what others like in it, but the roguelite format had me exit the demo in disgust
>>7307717941989s B-movie kino.
