> People say a game is mediocre, or as the zoomers like to say, "mid"
> They rate it at 7/10

Are they fucking retarded?
A 7/10 is the embodiment of GOOD. It's a good game, you had FUN, you LIKED IT. If you BARELY liked it or enjoyable it would be a 6/10

For it to be mediocre and have a ton of bad stuff mixed with the good it would be a 5/10, that's mid, that's mediocre.

Why are people afraid of using 5/10 when rating games? Or under 5/10? Is they can't use numbers just say

Terrible
Bad
Mediocre
Good
Amazing
Secret tier: Asmongold told me it's good so i pretend it's good, like E33.

7/10 is literal trash
8/10 is passable
9/10 is good
10/10 is masterpiece quality

I don't really like number ratings anyway, just give me your thoughts on the game. Even one or two sentences is better than a number.
>>
>>730760306
People dont actually know how to articulate how they feel about something in a way that is readily generalizable to others. As op points out a game that is dead average something you neither particularly liked nor particularly disliked should be exactly a 5/10.

But as

>>730760439
Says for some people they shift the scale all the way to the end where 1-6 arent even regarded as qualitatively different from each other. A game that is "bad" is simply bad there is no reason in their mind to gauge just how bad it is. Is there afterall any practical reason to debate whether a game is 1/10 vs 2/10? How would one even go about doing so?
>>
>>730760306
This is because of the school system grading, where 70% is just barely passing and below is complete failure and have to retake the course.
>>
>>730760306
Score inflation means 6 is the lowest score.
You can remove 1-5, they don't mean anything.
>>
>>730760306
A 70 is a D. Are you a D student?
>>
>>730761664
70 is a C
>>
>>730760306
7/10 isn't very good, retard. you do not know how scores work.
>>
>>730761664

Retard. In school you're not supposed to be under average. If you're under 60% it's an instant fail usually.

Videogames don't have the same rating. There's no "If you're under 7/10 you're BAD". There are plenty of "decent" 6/10 games or passable 5/10.
>>
Ratings have been inflated by reviewers taking infinite bribes since the magazine days and an insane amount of marketing, it's particularly bad in games where a 7 or 6/10 is seen as something that's garbage, where with a more mature medium like music, a 4/5 album will considered one of the greatest of all time

>Is there afterall any practical reason to debate whether a game is 1/10 vs 2/10?
Sure, it helps decide how to spend your time like any other review.
>How would one even go about doing so?
- 1/10: Actually belongs in a dumpster. Barely a game. Not even worth pirating.
- 2/10: Still not worth buying. Pirate it if you are a fan of the series/genre but don't expect it to be good.
- 3/10: Only worth a few dollars at best. Pointless time killer, and largely unenjoyable, pirate fare.
- 4/10: Some fun to be had but mostly not. Only buy if heavily on sale or a big fan. Piracy recommended but some may argue it deserves support to learn from their mistakes or whatever.
- 5/10: Average game, nothing to write home about but some good, some bad. Might actually be worth your money!

6 and 7 are just varying degrees of fanboyism and then legitimately great games at 8/9/10 that are likely enjoyable to everyone

nice strawman, the highest rated albums of all time aren't even 4.5s, imagine the greatest games of all time not even being considered 9/10 according to critics, that's how fucked videogames are as a medium to try to appeal to people seeing big numbers and going
>MUST BUY BIG NUMBERS WAOOWW
>>
>>730761893
literally, if you are under 7/10 you're bad.
>>
>>730762527
>5/10 might be worth your money

>>730763415
Yes. Nothing wrong with buying an average game with some good in it.

>>
>>730762560
5 point and 10 point system doesn't really translate because psychologically a 4/5 looks better than an 8/10. 4/5 is missing one point while 8/10 is missing two.
>>
>>730760306
People view it exactly like school grading where a 60% or lower is a failing grade so it doesn't even count. 70% is just barely passing with a D or C depending on your school.
>>
Just remember, Jacki Chan is an 8 and everything about video game scores makes sense.
>>
>>730760306
Reviews dont mean shit to me. I am in the mood for very different games all the time and you never know what will "click" for you.
For example, everyone shat on Lords of the Fallen but I absolutely loved it when I played it. On the other hand, everyone praised BG3 but I got bored shitless and quit during act 2. And I backed and played both Dos1 and Dos2.
>>
>>730764178
Which Lords of the Fallen?
>>
>>730764493
Not the 2.0 one but also not the early old one. I forgot which version it was but it was patched up to adress a lot of issues.
>>
>>730760306
If you account for how much trash truly exists out there and you define 5/10 as the halfway point of all video games, then 5/10 will come out as "complete shovelware".
>>
>>730760439
7/10 is unplayable
8/10 is playable but bad
9/10 is "passable" (playable but slightly less bad)
10/10 is "good" (passable)
>>
>>730765102

Yes? There are millions of games out there, the fact that the majority are unheard of or nobody cares about them means they are mediocre.
>>
>>730760306
When you understand that scale goes from 5 to 10, it suddenly all make sense.
>>
7/10 is really good
8/10 is really really good
9/10 is super good
10/10 is very good

and that’s all you need

7/10 is a C- grade, it's not good it means you were barely better than blindly guessing a 50/50 coinflip

Normally it would be like this
>1/10
Abysmal dogshit
>2/10
Slightly less abysmal dogshit
>3/10
Dogshit
>4/10
Bad
>5/10
Mediocre
>6/10
Above average
>7/10
Okay
>8/10
Good
>9/10
Great
>10/10
Masterpiece
However with the state of reviewers and journos being paid it’s more like this now
>1/10
Oh fuck you guys really shit the bed, the studio is fucked
>2,3,4,5,6/10
Abysmal dogshit
>7/8
Bad
>9/10
Average/mediocre
>>
A 7/10 would be "Almost Good"

5/5 - Great
4/5 - Good
3/5 - Okay
2/5 - Flawed
1/5 - Bad

So a 4.5 would "Good, almost great"
