Bethesda not forcing linear stories is a strength not a weakness.
It is a video game not a book. Another writer that fails to understand the medium they work in.
>>
>>730767310
bethesda does force linear stories and that's exactly what he's criticizing
>>
>>730766490
I doubt Todd is even involved in creating games. He's basically an executive/salesman, but people act like he's behind the design of those games.

Everyone has a slightly different vision of what fallout should be, probably because of the choice and roleplaying aspects of it and for color that's more because people want it, Ps3's "realistic" browns really were overused and people still have PTSD of that time

I think Emil genuinely tried to play the main story of Fallout 3 relatively straight faced compared to Fallout 2. Certain aspects of the side stories diverge from that because Bethesda's writing team has never been well unified in presentation, it's just everyone doing their own side quests with little to no overarching thematic goal. Then New Vegas came out and the writing of the dialogue, world building, characters, factions, choices utterly humiliated Fallout 3 and by extension Bethesda's writers. Now Emil copes by saying Fallout is just a stupid little series no one actually takes seriously in regards to narrative.

it took him way too long to figure this out
>>

Everything about Todd makes sense when you realize that he created Clavicus Vile to be his self insert.
>>
>>730770403
The problem with Emil's writing is that you are railroaded through what he thinks his personal playthrough and roleplaying options would be, with basically no way to diverge from what he came up with, which isn't much
>>
>>730770557
Yes, they're typically very linear and binary. Often times the presentation isn't even that bad but it definitely kills the sense of freedom one has in an otherwise quite sandboxy game.

Bethesda's stories are extremely linear, Skyrim's civil war was the closest we've ever gotten to a branching path with narrative choices impacting the world and they've never done it since
Fallout 3 almost had one but the expansion effectively retconned the choice by making both options with the water purifier result in the same thing

Correct. Which is why nobody should play Bethesdaslop full stop.
>>
>>730766490
I realize that literacy is at a low point but the context surrounding the "don't care" is that Bethesda doesn't care that they don't understand fallout's roots, not Fallout in general.
>>
>>730771359
this, just look at Starfield, an original bethesda IP, it was so fun I don't understand why everyone fucking hate it even normalfags, kys pajeet.
>>
>>730766490
They didn't give a shit about the original fallout games and lore, and that's been obvious from the very beginning. But that's not itself a bad thing. They bought an already established IP so they could have something to work with for their standard open world sandbox rpg, literally just oblivion with guns. And they were only able to buy the IP because the previous developer and publisher ran it into the fucking ground with garbage then went out of business. If Fallout Tactics or Van Buren or whatever saw the light of day then nobody would have gave a shit, because it would have sucked. It's only because Bethesda renewed interest in the franchise with their sandbox slop and dogshit engine that New Vegas was able to be made.
>>
>>730766490
Far Harbor was the only good thing Bethesda ever did for Fallout and the only independently virtuous release from them.

The other games were only good because they were highly modable.

He’s exactly right that they didn’t understand it. Vegas had personality and sense of place, like how breaking bad very much feels like somewhere close to the border, which is exactly what made the series work with the retro 50s vibes and why Far Harbor works with its distinctly New England feel.

Fallout 3 doesn’t FEEL like DC, Fallout 4 doesn’t FEEL like Boston.
>>
I played Starfield. I don't think Bethesda cares about anything at this point.
>>
the Fallout show is like if the Rocky movies were bought out by a different company halfway through and they wrote that Rocky was shot off screen by the new villain while Apollo, Adrian, and Paulie all die slipping on banana peels.

I cannot find it for the life of me but there was a really good post when Season 1 of the show was airing that broke down who Emil's greatest strength as a writer is that he can make the perfect RPG storyline for uninvolved normies who will play a game for a few hours a week then put it down for months before coming back to it.
And while nobody who enjoys media should ever want works to be made to appeal to those kinds of normies Emil can do it.

Was there ever a point when Bethesda cared about Fallout? They just saw a existing franchise they could grab and sell as "Oblivion but with guns and in RETRO FUTURISTIC AMERICA(TM)".

I played the game for like 30 mins before uninstalling it. I got to the space combat tutorial and just quit. I realised (high IQ, untested but I just know okay) that I had already seen everything the game had to offer, and that it would just be re-skins and more dumb stupid bullshit from that point on. I wasn't having it.

The combat was crap, the perks and skills were all 1/5 levelled linear dull and uninteresting (oh look everything "is the same" but with a different flavor or some similar facile manipulation of player perception), and the story thus far, even in those 30 minutes, the writing, was an essential oil extracted from turds.

Bethesda used to make games that treated the player with respect, i.e. trust the player was a human being with a brain and the capacity for perceptive reasoning and the ability to extract meaning independently, now they almost insult you with how low they assume your bar is, all the time.

They're trying to be something they're not (dudebro "streamlined" games for retards who believe self-originated thought is cringe, you know the social undercurrent I refer to, how could you not). I wish they would just go back to being what they are: a hardcore proper video game studio that makes "complicated" games for nerds that feature complex systems. I want them to respect themselves again.
