Ichiban is a fucking joke of a characters and the devs made it clear he is to be regarded as such going forward based on how they chose to treat him throughout the games.

I really liked Ichiban in 7, but I never thought he'd be able to carry the series on his own. I was hoping we'd start getting new protagonists with every major entry, but RGG Studios has been spinning their wheels hard since Nagoshi left. I don't think there's a real plan for the series, Ichiban or no.

Ichiban more than Kiryu feels like a character that requires growth, and to do that he needs his worldview seriously challenged. He's also with Saeko now and unless they break up between games again which would be REALLY stupid you have a relationship to portray. The obvious route forward is to kill Saeko off but I don't think they have the balls for it.
