But that's never the point. The classic RE had a VERY stylized, "anime" style to its world and characters. The classic Raccoon City was anything but "realistic", and was practically a super smash-up of Japs' stereotypical "overseas" images, slapped on top of their own narrow street design with tiny alleyway shops and shit.

looks way better in PS2. The textures are indisputably worse, but the HD fucks up the lighting, and lighting is giga important. Most modern games tend to wash things out too much and that ruins the style and composition of shots even if the resolution is higher.

Not quite true.
First of all, PS2 was a 200 Megahertz toy calculator with a bizarre GPU and less RAM than your granny's mobile phone. Even the "old reflections" effectively stressed the system at the time.

But these days, on an average lower-mid tier gaming PC or even a PS5? Planar reflections are 100% more than just "doable" these days, and can be optimized using all the same tricks we use for rendering the main frame, the game screen itself. AND it has been a drag & drop feature since the early 2010!

Gay-tracing is NEVER a "fix". It's a marketing scam, trying to create new problems that we solved 25 years ago.

So many people bitch and moan about UE5 as if it's inherently the worst thing ever that is so bad and must always mean degraded performance and bullshit, but the reality of the matter is that it's the new modern wave of college students and outsourced hires simply churning shit through default settings and calling it a day, trying their absolute damnedest to get something functional and then not bother refining anything. Several games, both forked and official branch, have proven UE5 is perfectly viable in competent hands, and it can even run as fine as UE4 or better - so long as you aren't forcing the new UE5 features in hamfistedly without proper tuning or oversight just to tout graphics.

Don't blame the tools, blame the one who uses them. And Sweeney, because he's a fucktard.

You actually haven't played the fuckin' game and are just trying to be contrarian, considering in the N64 version the blades Ganon has reflect enough to be fully visible and there's enough visibility between lightning flashes and contrast to the ground to be able to get around and attack. You see everything you need to see, the 3DS version just arbitrarily brightens it up so you see everything at all times.

It's also less fucking borked. Even with stability patches and shit, FF7PC has so many broken effects like characters having solid octagon shadows in battle, and sometimes certain audio cues don't work quite right. It's usually better to just run the original versions of games, even on emulation, unless you hit the MGS2/3 problem of pressure buttons, or modders can unfuck a port, like with Sonic Adventure.

I played the 3DS version because the N64 version has some of the worst graphics of the era because nintendo did not understand art direction like Rare or Naughty dog did.
it has jerky 10 fps animations too it sucks ass.

Anyway the N64 version made things too dark to hide how bad the models, textures and colors are.
In the 3DS version the models and texture art is impeccable so hiding it would be a crime against the art team and also make the boss fight worse.

I don't like the 3ds remakes at all. But they're a very poor example compared to most of these remake and remaster comparisons because they're categorically different.
They've got a bunch of genuinely dumb changes too, but these lighting differences are because they wanted to optimize for that dumb 3d depth screen gimmick thing. Absolutely not worth it in my opinion, but those changes are sensible from that direction. It wasn't made to look better, ignoring the gimmick.

Forward rendering means everything is rendered at the same time. This means a very limited number of light sources (like, three or four, max) but you can do reflections, transparency, multi-sampled anti-aliasing, etc...
Deferred rendering means rendering is done in stages. This means a functionally unlimited number of light sources, but no more reflections, transparency is limited, you're forced to use worse anti-aliasing methods, etc...

Basically, devs got too fucking lazy to do baked lighting anymore, and it's killed video game graphics.
