what's gonna happen differently that won't make the new steam machine end up like the old one?
>>
are you talking about the part where the old one didn't release?
>>

I had this, it came out. I got the Windows 10 version though, so the triangle in the corner was just empty, no Steam logo.

It was a nice little machine for its time and for it's price, I'd argue. The form factor being so small was a nice benefit.

>>730783793
there will actually be crazy demand because billionaires are spending trillions to make number go up and locked everyone out of future game machines

steam deck works.

Software support.

If you are really asking? I can give a real answer.

Linux can't run windows apps native. 99.9% of games have no native linux version. For many reasons. Hacking and theft and not many people use linux (even today) so why bother? Anyway with that said....

The first steam machines relied on all of the old methods Linux users were forced to use since no native linux games, running windows games in compat layers. Usually faking most of what was needed to get the game to even boot. Lots of crashes and things just DID NOT work. There was no alternative or better way. In the years later a super autistic (really) made a way for games to run better on linux. He wanted Nier Automata to work on Linux because he was so autistic he was told Windows BAD, he forced himself to use Linux. But HE REALLY WANTED to play Nier automata. Made the compat layers efficient, and all the proper hooks with a place to mount that are as close to native as can be. Valve took this and said "shit we can use this". A few years later SteamOS is out.

Really. Some turbo autstic that could not spend the 20 minutes 'fixing' Windows 10 "issues", spent 5000 hours making the basis of Proton. Which is what lets SteamOS run Windows stuff about 90% as good.

This is what will help the next Steam Machine. That and now Steam/PC has 4-5x as many users as console toddlers are jumping ship over to PC. But based on Steam Deck sales, and Linux still being at the same few percent of users..... it won't sell even 5 million.

>proton
>a controller that doesn't require an hour of set up for every game
>better big picture mode
>>
>>730783793
they're not going to 3do it by making it themselves
>>
>>730783793
The fact that it can actually play games now.
>>
>>730784356
no it doesn’t and never did. Practically all the handhelds can almost max out games from 2017 while the deck still lags behind. I seriously think my ‘ecks APU is fried by now. I will eventually open the thing up and show all you niggers what it did to itself
>>
>>730785494
Proton? you mean dxvk? Because the basis of proton is wine
>>
>>730783793
I think its going to end up the same. They should market it as a low energy use machine to anyone that lives in green Europeeings or to anyone that lives near a blood/electricity sucking datacenter.
>>
>>730783793
can you play project Nortubel in this thing?
>>
>>730783793
It's going to be the cheapest computer of its form factor
>hurr durr just buy this one if you want an entry level pc device
>unironically and exclusively posts a $300 shitbox witth a tenth of the power, and is larger in volume anyways
I have yet to see someone match the machine in power and size
>>
>>730785908
hes a stupid nigger what did you expect

Valve does some crazy software magic sometimes, like Steam being able to install a 100gb game faster than my 300mb internet connection should even allow, showing faster DL rates than what the cap of my plan is.
I have hopes, since it's essentially a PC emulator but I doubt it'll have a long lifespan if hardware keeps up with the trend of becoming twice as powerful every two years.
>>
>>730786171
That trend hasn't been true for half a decade or more. Even Gordon Moore himself said it would stop being true around the time it actually did..
>>
>>730783793
Prior Steam machines were third party and had no regard for the end user experience while also not having any of the many QoL improvements that Steam has since added to running games on Linux.
They essentially ran into the same issues that Linux netbooks did, in that they were just a bad experience jumping on a trend to make a quick buck.
