The NZ economy is fucked, nobody there can afford vidya anyway. Physical game stores are the least of their problems.

When the last time (You) went to Gamestop, or any video game store for that matter?

Depends
How well do Funkos sell these days?
>>
>>730787147
Probably like crap
People no longer think their sealed Funko will 10x in value in 5 years, so now it's only Americans who like filling their big empty house with landfill plastic that purchase them
>>
>>730785667
As an Australian, good riddance, they only sell the shittiest, tackiest most overpriced vidya merch and give nothing for trade ins. Game traders and local strores mog
>>
>>730785667
every time i went to ebgames here in aus some fat dyke would always ask if i also wanted to buy some plastic slop, so i stopped giving them money

New Zealand doesn't have eBay or Amazon, why should they have EB Games/Gamestop? Hobbit backwater.

>Walk into EBGames
>Only the tray table upfront (that you can see in the pic) has preowned games
>Always the same shit and priced exorbitantly, stolen from people sold them for pennies on the dollar
>Half the store is merch that I never see get sold
>Other half is a mix of merch and "new" games that are factory unsealed and the discs are hidden behind the counter (which, lawfully, ISN'T NEW. THAT MAKES IT PREOWNED)
>Ask if they have (insert anything of value here), they say no
>Leave without ever buying anything
That's been my EBGames experience for the better part of 15 years. Good fucking riddance they're closing.

They diversified their Australian stores to "Zing Pop Culture" and half their retail floorspace is dedicated to video game/marvel/anime toys & merchandise. Seem to be doing okay, 300+ stores. The New Zealand side probably didn't have economies of scale to make it worthwhile, under 40 stores.

I'll never understand this
A big retro game store in my city was in the same situation until they were shutting down and announced a clearance sale
Prices went from absurdly overpriced to at or slightly below market prices
Suddenly the store had a massive line out of the door and games that sat there for 10+ years finally sold

woah hey guys

these businesses are usually run by dimwits that are in places with high rents in retail spaces. of course they'll have their store cleaned out if the price is right, but they probably didn't even break even from that. these games stores have been gouging people for decades, especially when the bigger retailers stopped offering games for sale because they were competing against these shitty smaller stores. turns out that during rising inflation, people aren't going to subsidize the bad decisions of a business owner and say "thanks, mate!" for fucking me in the ass and charging me $100 for some slop title. these games stores in nz and australia truly believed for the longest of times that they didn't really have to compete with price. and now most of these stores are gone.
