So that's it then? VR is officially dead?
>>730788396No, it is and will continue to be a semi-niche toy. The VR metaverse specifically is dead, for the moment.
>>730788396>VR comes around>Zucc purchases Oculus>VR dies>blockchain comes around>Zucc founds meta, with blockchain functions>blockchain dies>AI comes around>Zucc says it's planning to focus on AImmmh... I wonder what would the future reserve us...

>>730788396If they had 3 VR studios around for a decade, and decent funding, why didn't they make games?

>>730788396I still use Quest2 daily for quick session of rhythm games to move around after day of work. It's sad that megacorps once again forgot that all technology today moved forward simply because people want to play games and not waste time with normalfags.
It's like wearables..... but with AI!

>>730788525the latest meme is glasses with microphones+speakers with Siri/Alexa/Gemini built in. You want that right? Sure you've already got a smart phone with a voice assistant and earbuds that can access that voice assistant and it's not unlikely you also already have a smart watch with its own voice assistant but surely you also want a pair of glasses with a voice assistant right?

>>730788396there’s like 3 different store fronts and it’s been 10 years or so and you can probably count the good games on both hands. they’re all so derivative and creatively safe; it just feels like the same 2-3 games rereleased with different skins. I think vr was let down massively by the software. I mean really what is there? shooty fruity (never got updated), beat saber, alyx, probably 2 slashers, 2 shooters, and some Bethesda games?
Meta has always been a trend chaser, never a trend imposer.

>>730788396Fuark I thought VR would have a revival with the Frame. Was actually planning on shilling 2K for one of these fancy 4K Oled headsets, but what's the point if it's just gonna collect dust?
The lizard man has contributed a lot to VR, the quest headsets are good, work standalone, and cost way less than most alternatives including the index, so they're super widespread now. A solid 70% of VR headsets on steam are quest variants, and the number of total headsets keeps growing slowly but surely despite there not being many new notable games.I think the reason they're pulling out is because the hardware is almost definitely sold at a loss with hopes to recoup that using software sales, like consoles doBut nobody buys shit on the overpriced quest store except rich parents of literal children. Most people stick to free games (and lots of them are android shovelware) or sideloading, or just do pcvr. I got to try one of the headsets for a week and most of what I did was sideload the hl1 vr port and connect to my PC to play Gmod VR They're also convinced people want AR glasses instead of VR headsets so they're investing more into that I guessI'm left wondering about the steam frame. Valve doesn't need to try super hard to recoup the cost because everyone already uses steam, so even with the hardware shortages I'm hoping it's actually affordable so I can get one
>>730793260>convinced people want AR glasses instead of VR headsetsThey are right about glasses, though maybe not about AR. If it was possible to make a VR headset with the form factor of 'thick-ish glasses', we would be looking at an entirely different market.I really do believe that the helmet form factor is what sabotaged it sadoption rate above all else. Who wants to wear a helmet?
>>730788525Sends audio and video of you and everyone around you to facebook where the AI will scan for antisemitism.
>>730790018I actually downloaded what they did have in that area and it did have one cool feature where you could have a cutout area which showed your actual desk instead of the VR, but then I could also do the same thing just having a traditional webcamI believe they gave up on the whole thing though
>>730793260AR glasses should be orders of magnitude cheaper to produce and the tech would be much more applicable to everyday use instead of being a gimmick for gamers. At least the reasoning is solid.
>>730793260In addition to what you said about people not using quest store the other thing was that videogames were always secondary to them, they wanted people to do shopping in VR (which they quickly gave up on) but what they desperately wanted was a corporate use case that never materialized.
>>730793735>they actually thought people would stroll around a VR walmart instead of going to a normal website and clicking "add to cart"That was surreal. Truly some of those people have lizard brains.
>>730788525one of the only ways they can make money with AI is to sell training data en masse, and they ran out of that on the internet years ago, so they're finding excuses to clip microphones and cameras to you so every minute of your life becomes money for them
>>730788396>All those people with Oculus Quests will be unable to use them once Facebook shuts down the servers, because none of them are jailbrokenLaughing at every VRFag that said "VR Is cheap just buy a Quest lol, what are you poor?"
>>730789356this webum really tickled the primal angry side of my brain
>>730793424Glasses or even goggles just aren't a very comfortable form factor. As soon as you add any weight or protrusion (and thus leverage), it just gets exponentially worse and you need to compensate for more movement, more pressure and more friction.>Who wants to wear a helmet?People liking or not liking something is entirely related to how it appears in marketing and media, just like how it took a while for people to broadly adopt helmets for skiing. The adoption rate of VR suffered because it very difficult to make marketing material for it and if you look at the Steam Frame marketing beyond just the standard kneejerk tranny posting, you can see how heavily it needs to fuck with psychologically manipulating the viewer to the point that it is using perspective tricks to make the person using the headset look less like the social outcast in a situation where they have completely isolated themselves from everyone else in the room.
>>730788396I'll post again to see if people understand:>Normal consumers don't like VR after their first impression>VR is not compatible with human senses, so it causes visceral discomfort>VR is not good for video games because it removes abstraction, and all games except simulators are highly abstract (have you noticed that horses don't walk in an L shape in the real world?)>VR is inherently childish, but children cannot use it because it negatively impacts their brain developmentBecause of all this:>VR will never be mainstream

>>730793907their clothes shopping tech was genuinely mindblowing but ive never seen it used in an actual storehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAcavi6aOGY
>>730794735Why would anyone program a bot to highlight the negative aspects (which are all obvious, by the way) of VR? If anyone were to waste their time on this, it would be the opposite, trying to sell the technology instead of criticizing it.Well, I've been posting this same thing for years. And I'll probably keep posting it for as long as I live, because VR will NEVER be mainstream, even if people continue to delude themselves about it.I don't think humanity will ever understand this, though. In 100 years, you'll still have people trying to make VR mainstream entertainment, but they'll keep failing. In the meantime, it'll be applied to the few things that make sense, such as training people who operate heavy machinery in simulators or other niche situations.
>>730795031>Why would anyone program a bot to highlight the negative aspectsI don't know, why would anyone devote their time to making the same asinine post in every VR thread? At a certain point, it takes less time to just program a bot to do it instead of dedicating time out of your life every day for years.

>>730788396VR just ended up being a clunkier way to do things you could much more easily do with your phone or laptop. The headsets were uncomfortable and the battery was shit. So you couldn’t even use it for more than an hour or two at a time.
>>730790640The internet is really really great
>>730794493>>VR is not compatible with human senses, so it causes visceral discomfortsorry im not a genetic failure. ive never felt motion sickness in my life >VR is not good for video games because it removes abstraction, and all games except simulators are highly abstract (have you noticed that horses don't walk in an L shape in the real world?)if you dont care about that in a video game, why would you suddenly care about it in a vr video game?i think the real problem with vr is your average normalfag retard expecting it to be the matrix when really its just the sequel to nvidia 3d. i bought a 144hz monitor in 2009 that came with nvidia 3d glasses as a free bonus and thought they were cool. vr is a direct upgrade to 3d monitors. im completely happy and satisfied with my purchase of a vr headset. my only complaint is the lack of official dev support for vr camera controlled modes in normal 2d non-vr games, but mods exist so i dont really care that much
>>730795124I don't know, anon, why is someone explaining the reasons why VR will never be mainstream in a thread that shows, for the thousandth time, that an attempt to make VR mainstream has failed? It's a mystery.

>>730792419Meta has every service metric bundled together to please their shareholders. They invent new metrics each month to keep the line going up.In the past were weekly users across different platforms, then it become monthly users, then monthly shared users (if one user, in the span of a week, log on a service owned by Meta (whatsapp, facebook, instagram) at least ONCE it count as a Meta monthly user), then family monthly user (same as before but it requires just one member of your family -calculated by their algorithm- to increase the metric)
