when did guns start sounding like popcorn popping?

i remember when guns used to sound brutal and metallic and now they sound muffled and soft

i guess this is the saving grace of apex legends despite being complete multiplayer slop, guns still sound good but it's the only one out there
>>
Developers actually began interacting with firearms and realized most guns don't sound like that.
>>
>>730790150
This. OP confirmed for noguns.
>>
tinnitus bro
>>
>>730790037
Because they all went for realism and recording actual gunshots at firing ranges instead of just grabbing said sounds and layering a bunch of other sound effects to make them sound punchier and cooler.
>>
>>730790037
Most weapons sound wimpy unless you're inside a building
>>
>>730790037
I'm going to talk out of my ass, for I have little knowledge, but I think the "pop" happens when trying to make distinctive yet realistic sounds that don't earrape the player. Never fired a gun, but from the little times I heard one (hunting shotguns), they are loud as fuck but sound like firecrackers, a bit underwhelming. I do know that in movies the stock sounds for some guns are just BIGGER guns, and some shotguns or rifles have cannon sounds; it's unrealistic, but it does sound cool that, e. g., Dirty Harry's 44, instead of a clean "PAH!", sounds like a howitzer "PAAAAOOOOUUUMMMMMmmmmm"
So... idk, probably the sounds are that silenced for you to hear other stuff, the enviroment, the enemies, the soundtrack, so, for "balance"
I remember playing Arma3 with some realistic sound tweaks and adjusted volume, and when using a machinegun I couldn't hear a thing, radio comms turned into "What? WHAT!? What ?"
>>
>>730790150
A better system would be making gun volume dynamic depending on if you're indoors or outdoors.
>>
Because it's realistic? A good gun is not supposed to be loud. The endgame of ballistic firearms is to have them all silenced while also having high lethality.
>>
>>730790419
I'm pretty sure Battlefield does that, but DICE is autistic about sound design so its not a good comparison to the rest of the industry.

The problem is it's a videogame, so you only get the sound and not even all of it. In real life you get the recoil and the full sound wave which rattles you a lot more (not just because it's a broader spectrum frequency but also because it's way louder than you'll ever have your volume at).

It's fucking stupid to go the "realism" route when the player is getting about 1% of the energy dumped into him compared to firing a real gun. The actual feeling is nowhere near the same no matter how accurate your gun range recording is.
>>
I really liked how the guns sounded in battlefield bad company 2 because they sounded like when you're wearing active ear protection
>>
>>730791161
Exactly. I'm not going to play games with actual earpro to protect me from hearing damage.
>>
realism is bland

I was shooting an airgun out of my bedroom window and dry fired it on accident and the thing fucking exploded
It was so loud that I went deaf in both ears and all I heard was a faint pop as my hearing went away completely for multiple seconds
It's now months later and I have permanent unignorable tinnitus in one ear that will never ever ever ever ever ever ever stop ringing for as long as I fucking live
I want to blow my fucking brains out
I fucking hate guns

I miss BFBC2 sounds. In-game they're stronger but the sound design itself is great.
>>
>>730790037
Unless you're firing starter gun blanks for the sake of being loud real guns don't make cannon shooting sounds.
>>
>>730790037
>when did guns start sounding like popcorn popping?
When sound design died. Now every single sound effect is just heavy amorphous base farts.

Same, shit fucking sucks. Sometimes I wonder if you can just amputate your hearing nerve or something to stop it.
>>
>>730790037
Somewhat related. I am no guns expert, but guns in modern shooters look like water pistols.

If you actually went to the range, you'd realize that gunshots, even with good ear protection, fucking hurt. They're deafeningly loud, and in a video game, you don't want that shit. You want each gun to be easily identifiable so that the player's familiarity with the guns is rewarded, and it allows them to tell even from a distance what type of engagement is going on (smgs having sounds distinct from rifles and shotguns, for example).

This board is full of thirdie retards who've never actually carried, I swear.

I would unironically rather be deaf than have to deal with this
How is it fair that I'm punished so severely for such a simple mistake

I'd take living with chronic pain over this easily, at least they make painkillers for that.

Around the same time it started in movies. Go ahead and check gun sounds in Terminator original vs 4k Blu-ray on youtube. Or even in Batman 1.

Which games use actual popcorn sounds for guns? Sounds kinda fun.

not the op but shooting a gun in a firing range with compressed audio and sound dampening from the firing range itself is not accurate

OP should give examples
>>

mmhhh tasty
