when did guns start sounding like popcorn popping?

i remember when guns used to sound brutal and metallic and now they sound muffled and soft

i guess this is the saving grace of apex legends despite being complete multiplayer slop, guns still sound good but it's the only one out there
>>
Developers actually began interacting with firearms and realized most guns don't sound like that.
>>
>>730790150
This. OP confirmed for noguns.
>>
tinnitus bro
>>
>>730790037
Because they all went for realism and recording actual gunshots at firing ranges instead of just grabbing said sounds and layering a bunch of other sound effects to make them sound punchier and cooler.
>>
>>730790037
Most weapons sound wimpy unless you're inside a building
>>
>>730790037
I'm going to talk out of my ass, for I have little knowledge, but I think the "pop" happens when trying to make distinctive yet realistic sounds that don't earrape the player. Never fired a gun, but from the little times I heard one (hunting shotguns), they are loud as fuck but sound like firecrackers, a bit underwhelming. I do know that in movies the stock sounds for some guns are just BIGGER guns, and some shotguns or rifles have cannon sounds; it's unrealistic, but it does sound cool that, e. g., Dirty Harry's 44, instead of a clean "PAH!", sounds like a howitzer "PAAAAOOOOUUUMMMMMmmmmm"
So... idk, probably the sounds are that silenced for you to hear other stuff, the enviroment, the enemies, the soundtrack, so, for "balance"
I remember playing Arma3 with some realistic sound tweaks and adjusted volume, and when using a machinegun I couldn't hear a thing, radio comms turned into "What? WHAT!? What ?"
>>
>>730790150
A better system would be making gun volume dynamic depending on if you're indoors or outdoors.
>>
Because it's realistic? A good gun is not supposed to be loud. The endgame of ballistic firearms is to have them all silenced while also having high lethality.
>>
>>730790419
I'm pretty sure Battlefield does that, but DICE is autistic about sound design so its not a good comparison to the rest of the industry.

The problem is it's a videogame, so you only get the sound and not even all of it. In real life you get the recoil and the full sound wave which rattles you a lot more (not just because it's a broader spectrum frequency but also because it's way louder than you'll ever have your volume at).

It's fucking stupid to go the "realism" route when the player is getting about 1% of the energy dumped into him compared to firing a real gun. The actual feeling is nowhere near the same no matter how accurate your gun range recording is.
>>
I really liked how the guns sounded in battlefield bad company 2 because they sounded like when you're wearing active ear protection
>>
>>730791161
Exactly. I'm not going to play games with actual earpro to protect me from hearing damage.
>>
realism is bland

I was shooting an airgun out of my bedroom window and dry fired it on accident and the thing fucking exploded
It was so loud that I went deaf in both ears and all I heard was a faint pop as my hearing went away completely for multiple seconds
It's now months later and I have permanent unignorable tinnitus in one ear that will never ever ever ever ever ever ever stop ringing for as long as I fucking live
I want to blow my fucking brains out
I fucking hate guns

I miss BFBC2 sounds. In-game they're stronger but the sound design itself is great.
>>
>>730790037
Unless you're firing starter gun blanks for the sake of being loud real guns don't make cannon shooting sounds.
>>
>>730790037
>when did guns start sounding like popcorn popping?
When sound design died. Now every single sound effect is just heavy amorphous base farts.

Same, shit fucking sucks. Sometimes I wonder if you can just amputate your hearing nerve or something to stop it.
>>
>>730790037
Somewhat related. I am no guns expert, but guns in modern shooters look like water pistols.

If you actually went to the range, you'd realize that gunshots, even with good ear protection, fucking hurt. They're deafeningly loud, and in a video game, you don't want that shit. You want each gun to be easily identifiable so that the player's familiarity with the guns is rewarded, and it allows them to tell even from a distance what type of engagement is going on (smgs having sounds distinct from rifles and shotguns, for example).

This board is full of thirdie retards who've never actually carried, I swear.

I want to roundhouse kick decapitate every single shithead ITT pissing and shitting and cumming themselves over realism. When playing a videogame you experience a fantasy, and fantasy should be cooler than the gay ass reality we live in. Realism fags like you should be sent to a gulag where you'll never be heard from again and NEVER be allowed to develop a videogame

Every game used to just take gun sounds from a stock library. Hell they still do this.
Ive heard the barret 50 cal gunshot multiple times in other media. Dont even get me started on the dogshit sound effect of the halo 3 AR.
>>
The last COD I played was BO4, and I thought pretty much every gun in that had good satisfying sounds to them
>>
>>730790605
The multiplayer or single player, because they ran on different engines and the multiplayer was basically a bad company 2 total conversion.
>>
>>730796697
Ok replace "realism" with sound design and the point still stands that lots of shooters have weak sounding guns.
>>
>>730790037
i am so glad i'm not a gunfag to be pissy about something like ballistic audio
>>
also turns out most gamers use 1W TV speakers or the fuzziest headsets they can find so having crap gun sounds saves on the audio processing given 99% players can't hear the difference
>>
>>730790150
If you shoot a 50 it's gonna sound metallic, you hear the action, you feel the shockwave on your face, bangs are louder than anything you've heard
>>
>>730792280
I don’t want to be the guy who tells you to wear ear pro now that it’s too late, and I’m so sorry for the damage to your hearing, but everyone else please take note. Wear ear pro when working with anything that has the capacity to damage your ears.
>>
>>730792642
I think a missed opportunity is to abuse ducking, it’s something I want to try with my game. Make it so gunshot events reduce the volume of all sounds other than the gunshot, to simulate loudness. Like the way EDM kick drums work.

Nigger, you're not wearing proper earpro if it hurts.
If it hurts, you're doing it extremely wrong.

You'll get used to it, tinnitus will become your friend, one day you won't notice it ringing and then you'll notice that and feel weird about it

Air rifles are quieter than surpressed firearms, they don't need hearing protection
I just didn't know the thing could fucking explode if you dry fired it on accident
It's fucking ridiculous

I have shot a full range day of 5.56 without earpro. It never hurt. Stop talking out your ass retard.
>>

>>730792725
"good" news, they can sever your hearing in one ear, which usually will end the tinnitus.
>>
>>730797364
I was going to make the point that people don’t wear safety gear in factories because they expect the machine to break, they wear it on the off-chance it does. But
>I just didn't know the thing could fucking explode if you dry fired it on accident
Sucks to suck I guess, that does seem like a huge design flaw. Though I would definitely want to know the potential modes of catastrophic failure of a machine before fucking with it.

I like the popcorn gun sound. I think that snap-thunk is far more satisfying than the BLAOW BLAOW noise games were using 3 generations ago.

I never played modern shooters (never played any COD, Battlefield, etc) I basically only played FPS titles up through Halo. Titanfall 2 was my first taste of “modern sound” guns and it was fucking awesome. I think people just have fatigue from the similarity if you play a lot of these games, as someone who hasn’t heard those noises incessantly for a decade I thought they were great.

I also really like the trend of making reload animations feel like you’re fist-fighting the gun, and I know people also hate that, and for similar reasons. It’s become identifiable so it’s easy to get bored of it and start memeing on it. But I think it looks fucking sick.
>>

Well if it makes you feel any better tinnitus often gets better with time, sometimes it takes years but it's more likely than not to happen. Trust me, I spent a lot of time looking at it when I first got mine and it didn't go away. Some days it's worse, some better. It's gotten better though. 12 years since I got it. It still rings but it doesn't bother me, sometimes I go for months without realising it exists just be reminded on 4chan by someone who's got it that it's there. It's quieter than what it originally was too.

Tinnitus is actually pretty common but since your case is a bad one you should seek some form of peer support irl
>>
>>730798578
I've already had tinnitus for years, it's just worse now and I can't ignore it or tune it out no matter what I do
