>Left: An MTV cartoon>Right: Disney Channel slopTools of Destruction filtered me so hard. They abandoned the entire tone of the series for a "Phineas & Ferb" kind of schlock. I believe 2000s were a time of cope through satire. America knew the corporate world was taking over, and nothing they could do but satirize it and be cynical. With Jewsny Channel, it moved from actually making fun of the Corporate class to "making fun with it". It couldn't be honest, like "Snake CEO pollutes Earth and then profits from it and retards eat up his commercials." Instead it's "Doofenschmirz Evil Incorporated" where you have a "villain who is friend." and any implied evil comes from having a german name because germans are canonically evil in history, not the people extracting the money. It's a shame Ted Price gave up on the comedy. The first 3 games are still pretty hilarious, but zoomers grew up with Jewsny Channel so the satire would go over they're head.
these games were for brownoids and white trash that werent cultured enough for mario
>>730792696I played both and my life is richer for it.
>>730792696You are circumcised.
>>730792696I haven't played it yet but honestly I had this perception of PS2 platformers and then I played Jak and it's honestly pretty alright. Inferior to Mario Sunshine and Banjo-Kazooie for sure, but I could see how someone could genuinely like this not just as nostalgiaslop. I'll try Sly and Ratchet next, my mind is opened.
>>730792575I know >youtube video but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kD_QhYgIA4 goes in depth on that, it is pretty interesting
Tools of destruction (and quest for booty coz its basically a standalone expansion) was the last one with a smidge of edge to it tho, a crack in time was the first time it felt overly sanitised for me
>>730792575I've only played Ratchet 1, 3 and Deadlocked but i think your observation on the evolution of media tropes since the early 2000's is accurate. Games used to be a channel for expression of social critique or anti conformism by smaller studios, but now it's all been repurposed into safeedgyslop
Damn I wonder why suits might not be willing to okay scripts where the bad guys are suitsIndies are our future, I'm afraid
>>730793328The depressing part is that they suits gobbled that up for the first 2 generations of 3D consoles. GTA was also full of anti-corporate satire. Dunno what happened to be honest. Ratchet & Clank had an entirely different style originally. It's why I can't bring myself to even try Rift Apart. It's just not the Ratchet & Clank franchise anymore imo.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5iVgMdZqbA
Why was everything so nifty back then? California was actually cool back then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlKzOrK9-Gk
>>730793408Because the suits weren't as powerful back then. Videogames were still largely a niche thing back in the day so the people in charge didn't have anywhere as much money, nor anywhere as much influence, plus there were way less people who knew how to make games so each individual developer held more power. Nowadays videogames are one of the most powerful industries in entertainment, moving billions and billions each year, and the people in charge are billionaires themselves, so they can justy say 'no' and the devs have to acquiesce, otherwise they just get replaced with a new batch
I picked up Rift Apart on the Steam sale and was pretty blown away by it to be honest. It legitimately makes Bananza, which I'm playing now, look like it's two generations old in terms of technology(which is crazy considering it just came out and costs 70 fucking dollars)More to the point, I did notice the writing was pretty sanitized compared to what I remember from the PS2 games which I played as a kid. Then again it's a mascot platformer, the writing and dialogue doesn't really matter that much. Cutscenes are kept to a healthy minimum which is all I really ask for
>>730793592Tbf, even compared to Mario Odyssey, if you just look at the tech and graphics of Bananza it's cut some corners. I'm sure Rift Apart is impressive, but when I saw the opening of the game I was dismayed to see them try to do that obnoxious "Woow look the gameplay SEAMLESSLY goes into cutscene" shit, but the gap between cutscene/gameplay is still fucking obvious. It's like a Call of Duty game, or Mass Effect 3 which also really forced this.I generally hate when games try to pretend that the gameplay is seamless to cutscenes. A hard cut is always more effective. You can't fool the player thinking they're still controlling, so the cutscenes shouldn't look gameplay-esque. Same happened in Resident Evil 7 where you have to see everything in first person and the camera is all shaky. Half Life 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 are better at showing how to do cutscene/gameplay in first person where it feels like the player is always partially in control. And in a third person game, just cut away from the gameplay. It's so unimpressive.
>>730792575ToD aged like milk, played it to hell and back in the day but doing it again now I didn't like it, the pace was sloggish and most weapons underwhelming to downright useless. Now ACiT on the other hand turned it around completely and is the second best in the entire series, second only to Going Commando, the pacing in it was a lot more dynamic and engaging, the only two moles on this otherwise great game are Sigmund (he's fucking annoying and lame) and the planet time anomaly mini game while playing as Clank (unfun waste of time, haha, where you have to point a laser on balls and they disappear: BOOOOOORIIIIIIIIIIING). The hoverboots were a joy to use and in general Ratchet hasn't looked better since in terms of design, armor and animations.I could go on but I'll conclude with saying that ACiT was R&C's swansong, everything after hasn't lived up to the series' hayday. Nexus was... Alright but that's about it
>>730793280>I've only played Ratchet 1, 3 and DeadlockedPlay 2 as well my friend
>>730793812I don't really remember that being too much of a thing, then again I don't have that particular gripe so maybe it went over my head. The one big setpiece I remember from the opening, which happens a few times during the game, is placing the player into a Sonic-Adventure style rail or ramp or whatever and you quickly move through different dimensions. I'm pretty sure this was meant to showcase the PS5's improved RAM and storage speed back when it came out, with the game instantly loading you in and out of completely different environments without any loading or stutter. Which is ironic since 4 years after this new games coming out will stutter like crazy during basic traversal of a small area
>>730792575>Left: An MTV cartoonRatchet was never THAT edgy. I don't remember any of the games having cursing, or blood. Ratchet only ever killed robots, or non-human monsters. I'm not saying I don't agree on the series' obvious transformation, But these weren't Jak games.
>>730793931The games kept being decent gameplay-wise, but ACiT also filtered me with its story. I just didn't even care/know what was happening at the end and Nerfarious was treated like a fanservice character in a way that really sucked.Everything is funny in 3 because the acting is so overdone and everything is a display of how retarded cartoons can be. it had the Britney Spears parody and also kinda made fun of military coolness. The robots you keep talking to in Ratchet 3 always make me chuckle because their voice actors are so clearly into the whole "robo-filter" thing so they exaggerate their vocal performance for a show, like "woooaaah" because it has to sound "extreme" or something.Nothing has that level of self-awareness in the Future games. Everything is just kind of basic and unfunny. Maybe because they decided to get a new writer who is some sort of fanfic writer. The original games and the PSP ones were all written by the same 3 people, who look like some 40 year old trucker dads.
>>730794130Yeah it's closer to Edd Ed n Eddy, or just Cartoon Network humor, but i would say even so it's a bit more biting in commentary than the things you'd see then. It's MTV humor but without profanity or explicit stuff.
>>730793328Hi fi rush felt very sixth gen in its tone because the entire game is anti corpo with these specific side characters that are employees at the big bad corp that are absolutely representative of the employees at tango gameworks.
>>730793148>tranny in the comments detailing his time programming the first two games>not really hes just kinda rambling about it and in a not very happy way.how depressing
>>730795075The fact that you straight up kill all the bosses really felt like something outside of today's framework, yeah
>>730792696I played all those games back then
>>730793976I started a run of 3 and Deadlocked recently, last time i played them on release, i might play 2 afterwards. I got a visual bug on Deadlocked i can't fix though and it's annoying and affecting performance
>>730795610>I hate the story of Rift Apart its so bad I don't give a damn about the Lombax Dimension. I hate Rift Apart for its egregious recycling of characters, down to Rivet who is just Ratchet but with a vagina. How original. Wait 'till they give him the nigger Spiderman treatment in the next entry.>And how many years has that story arc been getting dragged? As of this year, that'd be 19 years.19.Fucking.Years.
>>730795610With each generation Ratchet gets more and more sanitized. He's a pixar mascot at this point. The movie was a fucking mistake. Rift apart was even fucking worse with how flanderized out main duo has gotten. Jak was lucky he died with 3 instead of being turned into a zombie franchise.
>>730792696KYS FAGGOT
>>730795775Deadlocked's HD port has graphics glitches even on PS3. I played it on PCSX2 recently and I didn't spot any visual errors.
>>730797435I'm emulating the ps2 version on pc, and at one point everything decided to bloom and it's very distracting
>>730797801Probably because you tweaked it from native settings. I always stick to native resolution of the original hardware and use the most compatible settings. If it looks too grainy you can just add a scanline filter. If you want a higher resolution set it to the 720p, 1080p or higher defaults in the list, not "auto/window size" since that tends to break emulated 3D games in most emulators.
>>730797865Yeah i think I'm gonna reset the whole settings back to default and see from there
