What happened to server browsers?, why modern devs so hesitant on adding it?

Server browsers are a good indication of the player base and they don't allow developers to use matchmaking nonsense such as putting you in lobbies you'll pubstomp when you buy a new skin, skill based match making and so on.

The average gamer is still going to buy a game without a server browser, nobody really has no server browser as the reason they don't buy.
So it gets cut. It's an easy way to cut down on design costs, prevent the game death spiraling because "dead game" and allows retarded matchmaking algorithms.
