Is reading VNs to learn Japanese just a meme or does it actually work?
>>
how are you going to read them if you dont know japanese retard
>>
>>730792992
I learned English through video games, but I also was a KID and it was probably much easier.
>>
>>730792992
>reading
>>
>>730792992
It does, I learned a lot from them - though in the very beginning it was rough because looking up kanji I didn't know was such a major pain in the ass. There's maybe some useful apps for that these days to make it more convenient.
>>
>>730792992
To certain extent, yes. You need to start with ones which feature lots of Hiragana ruby text over Kanji, and you need to be ready to look up words constantly, possibly adding them to your daily word deck.
But you also need other form of studying, as with any other language. I'm not saying you need to go to class, but read textbooks, do independent courses, etc.
>>
It’s much better to just go to Japan and stay for a month speaking to as many people as possible but that’s too money and time intensive to be proper advice
>>
>>730792992
It actually works but you have to be consistent and do constant lookups
>>730793095
Is easier learning a language as an adult than as a kid
>>
>>730793297
Yeah these days with kanji OCR that actually works it's so much easier.

It does, but really anything works for immersion so long as it's something you like. Stop looking for the best solution and just dive in.
>>
>>730792992
It works. But the mods on the language reddits don't want you to know it because it:
a) works
b) is embarrassing to admit out loud
>>
Recommend me some easy vn’s in Japanese to read. I’m moving to Japan in four months for academic work.
>>
Yes, reading things in Japanese will teach you Japanese. But the FAT CATS in KYOTO, they don't WANT you to know that!

Being bad at something feels bad. As a kid you pick up stuff as you go and everything is new and difficult for you and you don't know any better. As an adult it's easy to get settled into things you are already good at and avoid that discomfort. You probably also have higher expectations of yourself for a skill than you would of a kid even though you are just as much as a beginner and you have to cross that mental block.
Those are more of an issue of motivation though. You have better resources, ability to understand more complex things and can be more efficient with deliberate practice. Just don't fall into other extreme of spending more time hyper-optimising your training routine than actually practicing something.

i don't think so, unless you're stopping to look up every word you don't know

You'd probably do a deck like kaishi before so you're not looking up every word and choosing an easy vn

That's how you actually learn Japanese, yes. It doesn't fucking matter what you're reading, although looking up every word in a VN when you know none would obviously be a pain in the ass.

It's like reading marvel comics to learn English, it may get you there somewhat but if you try to speak in public using only marvel comic lingo you are bound to ridicule yourself by not understanding every day vocabulary that never makes it to media.

Cool thread, reminds of how I learned Japanese, moved to Japan and read Monobeno in 2016. Also passed N1 that year.

Time sure flies.
>>
>>730792992
Yes
You need to translate shit yourself though and have a method of solidifying the words you learn that don't come up often like Anki

That's cool. Best I could do was N4. School was too hard and there was simply too much I could never fully grasp so I never felt comfortable reading and just gave up.
>>
>>730795729
That can't be right can it
>>
>>730795767
There's a lot of Indians and SEA people around here. Mostly in konbinis and cafes etc.

Her name is Summeris, which is a play on the common name Natsu which is usually given to boys, and does in fact mean summer. She was born in the summer, but her parents received incorrect information from their doctor that she would be a boy while her mother was pregnant, which is why they were planning to name their son Natsu. When she's born her parents realize the name wouldn't be appropriate and her father starts a sentence by saying "Summer is..." (natsu wa...) before trailing off, but her mother stops him and says "That's perfect!" and the name stuck.

>>
>>730796235
It's even worse in civilized Japan because the asians in general for some reason have this "the customer is king" mentality so they think it's ok to trample workers, sometimes including cruel psychological shit.
>>
>>730795767
A lot of min-wagies are SEA people. Hotel might have a jap at the reception but all the cleaning staff is flips and indonesians. Convenience stores, mostly brown even customer facing staff. Japs are still comedically racist and half of the google reviews are going to be seething about it though.
They also have small by totable populations of chinese and koreans but you can't tell them apart that easily and most chink you will hear in the streets are tourists.

Tokyo School Life. You can have 2 text windows up one entirely in kana, with furigana, or even romagi(if your insane). It's also a game about a foreign exhange student visiting Japan for the first time so it's oriented around a lot of basic stuff to know.

>>730797325

Yes it's true, japs are expected to do great.
Too bad konbinis are full of indians and seaniggers so they don't do any of that shit.
>>
>>730797563
How do know? Did you read it in JP and EN? There are a lot of translations I thought were fine. Until you see one line, you check it, its bad, then 10 more lines follow. Then the translation you thought was fine goes from okay to rewrite.
