Is reading VNs to learn Japanese just a meme or does it actually work?
>>
how are you going to read them if you dont know japanese retard
>>
>>730792992
I learned English through video games, but I also was a KID and it was probably much easier.
>>
>>730792992
>reading
>>
>>730792992
It does, I learned a lot from them - though in the very beginning it was rough because looking up kanji I didn't know was such a major pain in the ass. There's maybe some useful apps for that these days to make it more convenient.
>>
>>730792992
To certain extent, yes. You need to start with ones which feature lots of Hiragana ruby text over Kanji, and you need to be ready to look up words constantly, possibly adding them to your daily word deck.
But you also need other form of studying, as with any other language. I'm not saying you need to go to class, but read textbooks, do independent courses, etc.
>>
It’s much better to just go to Japan and stay for a month speaking to as many people as possible but that’s too money and time intensive to be proper advice
>>
>>730792992
It actually works but you have to be consistent and do constant lookups
>>730793095
Is easier learning a language as an adult than as a kid
>>
>>730793297
Yeah these days with kanji OCR that actually works it's so much easier.
>>
>>730793582
>kanji OCR that actually works
Vaporware
>>
It does, but really anything works for immersion so long as it's something you like. Stop looking for the best solution and just dive in.
>>
>>730792992
It works. But the mods on the language reddits don't want you to know it because it:
a) works
b) is embarrassing to admit out loud
>>
Recommend me some easy vn’s in Japanese to read. I’m moving to Japan in four months for academic work.
>>
Yes, reading things in Japanese will teach you Japanese. But the FAT CATS in KYOTO, they don't WANT you to know that!

Being bad at something feels bad. As a kid you pick up stuff as you go and everything is new and difficult for you and you don't know any better. As an adult it's easy to get settled into things you are already good at and avoid that discomfort. You probably also have higher expectations of yourself for a skill than you would of a kid even though you are just as much as a beginner and you have to cross that mental block.
Those are more of an issue of motivation though. You have better resources, ability to understand more complex things and can be more efficient with deliberate practice. Just don't fall into other extreme of spending more time hyper-optimising your training routine than actually practicing something.

That's how you actually learn Japanese, yes. It doesn't fucking matter what you're reading, although looking up every word in a VN when you know none would obviously be a pain in the ass.

They also have small by totable populations of chinese and koreans but you can't tell them apart that easily and most chink you will hear in the streets are tourists.

>>730799295
Well you learn the alphabet obviously, that way you know the one with c is a cat and the one with b is a bat, saying "learn words instead of kanji" would be like saying "learn words instead of the alphabet"

>>730799441
But what does "learning them as they come up" entail
>>
>>730799217
This lines up well with the Dunning–Kruger effect. While the most competent have the highest self-evaluation, their self-evaluation is lower than their actual performance. One of the explanations is that even though the most competent did evaluate their own performance correctly, they assumed their peers would have performed similarly.

Well, you have about a million other words that use 転 to fall back on. Like 転々.
>>
>>730799076
Yeah, I don't get it either. I think overprioritizing grinding kanji and trying to learn all reading in a vacuum can be an issue but throwing compound words at you and trying to brute force it seems equally pointless. Even if trying to work out a word based on kanji is generally not practical it's much easier to learn by forming associations.

>>730799225
Isn't this just proving the point? You can only read this because of the context and a lot of subconscious experience decoding it. For someone who isn't fluent in english it's completely meaningless.

>>
>>730799607
This is a lie, because if this was true, I would currently know negative amounts of Japanese.
>>
>>730799502
>But what does "learning them as they come up" entail
Through repetition, you start to recognize the radical elements of the kanji, then you make observations like these >>730799548.

But yeah, you can go for a more radical approach, like RTK. You will realize by yourself anyways (like I did)
>>
>>730799558
I think it's the other way around, if women weren't such bitches nowadays a lot of these men wouldn't need to go for literal children in order to find a romantic surrogate
>>
>>730799548
But how do you know those other words use 転 and not 軽 or 輊 or 軟 or 較 when you see those words for the first time
>>
>>730799665
You need to retake those math courses.
>>
>>730799728
That's what I meant but my anger towards women got me heated so I added a "not" where it wasn't needed
>>
>>730799673
So trial and error, sounds crazy inefficient to me given that you can just learn the radicals or RTK in the same amount of time or less and also come out of it being able to write as well
>>
>>730799762
If you really wanted to know, you'd just look at them. They share a component or 2, you can still see the difference. But in practice? You don't actually read the kanji. Just like how in english you don't rasd entire words. You see the outline and you're brain fills in the rest. Kanji works the same way. This is why individually studying kanji or radicals isn't all that necessary. As you get better you're not going to be using that knowledge.
>>
>>730799971
You seem completely unable to put yourself in the shoes of someone who's first learning the language

This seems to be the main reason anyone under 30 reads VNs. They want to gain something from it and can't simply enjoy them like older people that were around for them during the golden age.
So, people see VNs as tools so they can get to their real goal of watching vtubers, playing gacha or doing other "modern" stuff at which point they will discard them.

it's about how much you pay attention to the kanji when you read and memorize those words, initially it's easy to just memorize the shape of the word but then you encounter a word with kanji that are slightly different so the only way to differentiate them is to actually study the radicals and pay attention to the kanji when you're reading or using something like anki
as for the meanings of kanji, you just get a feel for them after seeing them in enough verbs or compound words
