If you want a "I want to customise my town to my exact specifications", go with New Horizons. For an in-the-middle experience with the most amount of content, pick New Leaf. People will bitch about this, but there's genuinely no reason to check out the original Animal Crossing outside of nostalgia. I could try picking this up again, but it felt like a much more boring and tedious slog compared to other AC games. Despite being on weaker hardwares, the older entries still had more depth to them. New Horizons leans too much into dollhouse territory. Maybe I should try some of the newer Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games instead.
