I always felt the dialogue in 2 felt too basic compared to 1. I get that Artemy doesn't even have a degree, but by comparison to Classic HD, all the characters had a lot less to say, spoke much plainer English, and all of Artemy's responses were very generic.
I really do feel that P3 fixes that - obviously Dankovsky's own responses were always going to be more elaborate, but I feel they addressed my issue with the other characters as well. Feel they speak in metaphors much more than in 2.

Personally they're not really comparable as what they're trying to do is so different. There are elements I love about 2 that aren't even a factor in 3, and vice-versa.
I've only done days II-X so far, but I'd probably slightly lean towards 3 on account of being a lot more innovative. I'm sure if I replay P2 after this I'd probably shift back the other way again. They're equally good I'd say.

Surprisingly I'm liking 3 a lot. The gameplay differences may sway you either way, but my all my previous pathologic 1 & 2 playthroughs total up to about 160 hours, so it's refreshingly different. Juggling the actual duties of saving the town and your personal quest to find info about Simon is fun. Danil is smug but far more unstable than 1. Haven't finished it though, this is only after about 15-20 hours

Same - I've just hit a block for the first time where I can't unlock the last few days, and I really like the game is challenging me now to think critically about what actions are the most likely to solve the issue i've got.

I initially hated the idea that 3 will be completely different gameplay wise but after playing it, it feels like the right choice and having the same gameplay but a slightly different story feels lazy, tedious and repetitive in hindsight.
New gameplay suits Danko way better too, back in Classic there wasn't all that much doctoring to you, just rummaging through trash and fighting bandits with the unique gimmick being a stupid infravision scope.
I'll forever miss the art style of the original, but the new one is good too and more cohesive overall.

I'm ok with the art style evolving - I loved how P2 had that kinda autumnal look to everything, and the haziness really gave you the impression of the twyre being in bloom.
The visuals of 3 feel a lot higher contrast which highlights all the architectural details at the cost of the steppe vibes - which feels much more Dankovsky-coded.
What I miss most is the fucking soundtrack to P1, it's so fucking good and totally unique. 2's soundtrack had great moments and 3's is fine, but neither hold a candle to P1.

They're very different games, P2 is all about survival and doing everything you can within a shrinking time frame every day.
P3 is much more of a puzzle game, where the death isn't a big deal but you can softlock yourself if you keep jumping between days too much.
Has some good dialogue and writing, e.g. the always present latin responses to kin people's gibberish and talking to the people 'implementing' your decrees in the most half-assed way possible.
Overall I'd prefer P2 just because I like that style of game more.

Strictly subjectively, I prefer P2. The gameplay and the narrative are more seamless in their integration and the slow routines associated with survival help me to be incredibly immersed.
Also, P2 didn't actively punish you for indulging in too much dialogues, never made me decide to cut a conversation short purely out of worries about the timeclock.

With that said, these are purely subjective feelings, because frankly, I don't think you can compare the games in any other way. I've said it in another thread but I'll happily repeat myself:

Playing Pathologic 3 after P2 made me consistently wonder back to playing The Void after Pathologic 1. It's just THAT much of a departure, that much of a different experience. You can see it's unmistakable IPL, you can see all the great features of the settings (charters, lore etc...) but if feels so FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT in how you experience it that trying to compare the two just feels... misplaced, or silly.

I can't say that "P3 would be better if it played like P2" is kinda like saying "Homeworld 1 would be better if it played like Halo" - it's a meaningless statement. I am not that far in P3 but it is over 10 hours already and I can safely say: this story would not work in P2's gameplay.

You know as someone who hadn't played many IPL titles (only P2 and tried the Void for 2h) my biggest fear, perhaps unreasonably, was that we'd get "another one" which is just the same game with some mildly different dialogue in the same world and with the same gameplay. It's what I'd expect from other studios. Feels like a sequel is often just the same game with better graphics, a few QOL things added and a mildly different story (but not too different, or you'd alienate fans).
But I agree 100% with you that P3 feels like a fundamentally different game in such a extreme fashion that considering them the same franchise feels wrong somehow.
I can't speak for others, but I am thankful for that change. I don't like everything about P3, and I think I prefer P2 still (though that's a bit unfair as it's my favorite game of all time), but I'm really glad that what we are getting is genuinely novel and interesting and unlike what came before. It makes me excited to buy future IPL titles, if nothing else just to see what the fuck they are cooking up.

My feelings are a bit more mixed on this. I would not mind more of Pathologic 2 with new character and some tweaks to the gameplay. I did always say that I do wish Bachelor's story did reflect a bit more of his managerial role, with mechanics that would allow you to coordinate orderlies, solve local dilemma's, oversee the hospital etc... so I did get what I asked for in that regard, but if it was up to me, I would have not sacrificed the open world and hobo economy for the time-jumping angle. But that is very heavily because I not only liked the previous Pathologic titles, I found P2 to be nearly a perfect game for me, I only wished the balance was tighter and the melee was different, otherwise, it's this life-sim thing that always, always gets to me, it engrosses me so much, and the only game that ever got close to that experience was KCD.

With all that said, I do take a passionate P3 over one made out of mere obligation. P3 feels like something that - despite the clearly very, very fucked up and painful development - is something they clearly enjoyed experimenting with. My hypothetical ideal P3 would have been different but... one of the beauty of IPL games is that they explore serving you shit you didn't even know you wanted.

So yeah, I'm happy with this. I'm happy they experimented and I'm very seriously impressed with how successful they are. It's more an experience I'd expect from a new Lucas Pope game than what I expected from Pathologic, but damn, doing something that fucking compares to Return of Obra Dinn - in a god damn Pathologic framework, is impressive as all fuck.

I think we feel the same way, it's why it's my favorite game of all time. It immersed me in a way that no other game has done before or after. However I have to be honest and say that that's largely luck. The default difficulty was perfect for me, such that I was constantly challenged and felt overwhelmed during my first playthrough, but managed to ultimately keep my head above water and prevail. I've watched many lets plays of P2 over the years and it's fairly obvious that this wasn't a result of amazing game design, but largely luck. I've seen people get overwhelmed and dislike the game because of the difficulty, I've seen (perceived) softlocks or gameplay so restricted by punishment that the players just suffered through it. At the same time once you have some understanding of how the town works, it becomes almost too easy provided you choose to make use of all systems in place. It happened to work out perfectly for me, but if I'm honest objectively it just doesn't work for too many people to be considered a great design.

Exactly. It's an amazing game and I love them for taking the risk in an environment where risk is so rarely taken. At the same time the part of me that loved P2 would have liked "P2, but more" even if it would have been lazy. I just liked the game too much not to want more.

I don't believe that, I think P2 was a result of incredibly well considered game design. IPL always had a fundamental understanding of both how their systems connect to the broader narrative experience (they did make The Void after all), and capacity to extremely correctly understand their target player's responses (the Abino in P1, Surface in TV and the second Rat Prophet in 2 all being fascinating plays on player expectations, and each one hit me like a truck).
A lot of people being filtered out by the challenge isn't really a fault of the developer, you correctly identified that pretty much all of that was self-imposed. P2 is not actually a particularly hard game, I would even argue that P1 is genuinely harder. People not coping with P2 is a combination of ingrained bad habits and lack of desire to challenge yourself and challenge those habits - and I think people who fall victim to that just... would not appreciate the damn story anyway, given that this idea of growth from pain and overcoming yourself is literally also the game's core narrative concern.

So I really don't blame the studio for that, I think that is just the reality of most people playing games being a bit... well, lazy.

It can get very easy, on the other hand, there are some pretty game breaking strategies that can trivialize the game on repeat playthroughs, but that is also somewhat understandable in a system-heavy game (just look at the broken strategies people developed for games like Gothic and Morrowind and KCD1) and P2 is actually quite system heavy.

You really do, especially if you found P3 really tickling that "detective" itch. Until P3, Obra Dinn was by far the most successful attempt at a nearly pure investigation gameplay. It's also really fucking cool, visually and music-wise. IPL is my favorite developer of all time, but Lucas Pope is second.

Unfortunately I did two playthroughs with the first going horribly wrong, second I thought I'd done everything right but it still wouldn't let me ascend so I threw in the towel. I should go back and maybe finish it as TV instead of Turgor considering it's supposed to be far easier.

I'm so glad these games are niche enough that people can actually analyse and discuss the games properly in these threads - it's what /v/ used to be like and I realise I haven't experienced this since P2 came out.
That being said, I'm also stunned by how much I'm enjoying the game and how everyone in these comments is also generally being extremely positive.
There was a huge amount of negativity after Quarantine and in the run-up to release, myself included, and i'm genuinely shocked that everyone is being so positive about it.
Shame even if it seems to be selling mildly better than P2, it probably won't buy the devs anything more than half a bowl of borscht.

It's not. It's just objectively worse. It's literally the game's early beta. The only people who claim Turgor was a better game are people who never understood anything, and were impressed by the sheer VOLUME of spoken words.
There used to be a genuine schizo who posted in IPL threads quite regularly who actually went mental because of this change, we used to call him Guahar poster.

The Void cut out most of the dialogue from original Turgor, but it was for a damn good reason.
As for Surface, what I mean is your first visit, which should trigger around day 20 automatically. It's the first time you see the world of not actual abstract imagery, but the real world, a deeply familiar and melanchoic reality.
It's basically the Albino in reverse. Where P1 used Albion as a jolt of weirdness after the strangeness of P1 started to slowly turn into routine, the Surface in The Void exists to remind you "there is something much more real, much more concrete behind all this surreal and metaphorical imagery".

As for your troubles with Turgor... yeah, that sounds like Turgor. That version of the game was incredibly buggy and inconsistent, because again: it was literally early beta, complete with placeholder voiceacting and assets at times.

I'm stuffy and pretentious so figured that even if the gameplay sucked, it was worth doing Turgor over TV if it just had more narrative content - I have no problem with lots of meaningless pseud dialogue lol and I really enjoyed my experience despite the fact the game's systems felt completely broken (I was aware that most of these systematic issues were fixed in TV).
I'll do TV soon then properly, and yes, I do remember the surface sections as being hauntingly beautiful in a way that no other game has really captured. I think, unfortunately, I will have to replay Classic HD first because it's been nearly 10 years and I don't actually remember any of the detail other than the broad strokes, so I'll definitely do at least Bachelor again, possibly Haruspex as well.

I disagree. If you make an experience and out of 100 people 5 really, really love it but 70 have to give up or don't enjoy it, I think that's a design issue. And I can't agree that it's self-imposed as those people didn't know of the ways they could have made things easier on themselves.
I suppose the question is if it would have been possible to give those 5 people for whom it worked amazingly well a similarly great experience, while reducing the 70 to like 30 or so. I suspect there'd have been a way, even if I have to admit I can't say how. If it wasn't possible, then I'd agree with you.

See that's the position I used to have too, "it's the player's fault" and "it was necessary for the type of story told". But then I played outer wilds, and while it's a radically different game, the story beats are very much about not giving up (or giving up in the end by acceptance rather than fighting it(outer wilds base game spoilers)) and unlike p2 it seems to alienate far less people, even if it still does of course have some people who look up puzzles and then complain that the game had little impact.

I think I'm still in that phase where I realized I'm old(er) now and no longer enjoy mindless action games or games that offer insane playtime, but rather smaller and well crafted experiences with a bigger emotional impact. I'd much rather pay for 10h of a really great game than 150h of an okay game. As a result I'm still hesitant to buy the games that offer that because in the past I'd not have enjoyed them, but consistently whenever I try one of the games doing that I end up loving them. Obra Dinn seems like exactly that type of "shorter game that stays with you" experience.

I think it was partly all the pretty toxic discourse around Dybowski's departure, a lot of people feeling the studio would be adrift without him, Quarantine heavily showcased the changes that are the least popular and did a poor job selling the time travel elements because it doesn't really work in such a small snapshot of game.
That, and I think I just find it incredibly hard to get excited for anything in general these days, because even the good stuff is usually safe and focus group tested - Stalker vs Stalker 2 being a good example.
Probably also helps that the game runs much better than P2 did at launch, and while it is obviously buggy, they are fixing them very quickly and many of the bugs are more annoying than game-breaking.

No, The Void isn't particularly easier than Turgor, actually. It's a fair be more accessible, with the early game having more of a structure than it does in Turgor, and glyphs are a HELL of a lot easier to draw due to much better tracking (it's still pretty bad, but it's less terrible).
Otherwise, it's still incredibly difficult. The only explanation I can figure out about TV requiring "70% less color" is that who ever told you that never realized how Nerva alters your stats, and did not realize that he just had 100+ drops of Gold circling through his veins.
Which would be fitting from people who genuinely think that Turgor is somehow the "better" version of the game.
As for the story, here is the thing: just because one version of the game has a lot more words in it does not mean it has more to actually tell.
The Void cuts out an endless sea of meaningless drivel, a fucking tsunami of deliberately self-contradictory and surface-level (no pun intended) explanation whose sole purpose is to confuse. The game originally leaned a LOT into postmodern theory of narrativity, the idea was that faced with so much incoherent and even contradictory lore tibits, the player would be forced to become a co-author, creating his own, unique version of the lore.

This was cut, for two reasons: 1) it's not as smart as it sounds, and 2), it distracts and thus detracts from much better, much deeper second-layer of the narrative, which isn't just pretentious post-modern "do it yourself" posturing.
The Void focuses on that much more substanial, deeper level of the story, the one that actually ties to the gameplay.

I was similar with the demos. Didn't post here about it, but the first demo didn't make me very excited. Second one did though. I also wrote a lot of feedback on each demo, most of which they actually seem to have addressed.

Is it? I initially thought that but reading throught threads it seems that the difficulty is less mechanical and more about solving the puzzle. Its easier to stay alive but you still have to unlock days and cure patients, and you can just fail the game if you run out of amalgam, which is a very harsh penalty.

Im only on day 5, though. Just really begun to get a feel for it. I do have the initial feeling that its easy because i can just restard the day and focus on completing the quests i didnt have the time to complete. If thats all there is to it then yeah, its easy to just do that. But if i gotta figure out which questis to complete and what outcomes influence future events, then its more complicated than just brute forcing every day.

Resources are finite even though time is unlimited. So by the time you are at endgame and want to go back to tidy up all of your quests… you realize you can’t. That you can very easily soft lock yourself and run out of amalgam.

All your resources are front loaded and then they just drain quietly in the background until you’re in a crisis

It is a very different game compared to 2. Haruspex was focused on day to day survival and ensuring the plague kills as little of important characters as possible.
Bachelor is a lot less personal and is more of a detective/deduction game. You don't struggle for food and such. Your job is to keep the town infection as low as possible while fighting the urge to kill yourself. And it's very good but I don't like fast travel.

Ask yourself this question: Why does P2 rank so highly with some people, but most people have never even heard of it? Why do some people really like it? Because the game is perfectly designed for them, in a way that it wouldnt be if it was more forguiving.

Sorry but this seems like a very low IQ comparison. I've not played the outer wilds but P2 is more than "just the story". The difficulty isnt an optional aspect of the game, the difficulty IS the game. Its part of it. The devs didnt want to just make a game here characters say pretty words about not giving up, they wanted to make a game where you as the player felt the pain the characters feel, to immerse the player in the world by making them victim to the plague. This isnt something that can be told to the player, only done. You cant feel the pressure of the game by it simply telling you its there.

Theres a lot of game out there that are made for mass appeal. Let P2 be niche, thats what it wants to be. Thats what it excels at. Thats what it will ultimately be remembered for.

This is exactly the way to showcase the horror of the plague when you can time travel, where it seems like you cant adjust the past without fucking up the future and the plague wins. In P2 the plague was draining at your material resources, while in P3 it drains your time. Gives you a false sense of security at the start only to pull the rug from under you when you're just getting used to being an immortal time lord.

Imagine fighting an opponent across time and you still lose? Imagine a game that instills that dread on you despite you having so much power? Thats incredible.

Artemy's connection to the town becomes the players as well. P2 was my entry to the series, and I miss the feeling of connection to the streets. I had almost every inch of the map memorised by my second playthrough. There are shortcuts between districts that were removed (for gameplay obviously, but) why would Dankosky know or care about them? P2 had it's reputation system, let you know the daily death toll and allowed you to trade with almost every NPC. Not to mention Isador being your father, or your wards. Maximum connection to the town and its people.
P3 is doing it's own thing and doing it well, but it is a bit colder. Which fits its protagonist.

You keep restating the point of contention as truth, which is where the disagreement comes from.
If that is the case, then yes, you are right. But I don't think it is.

Arguably an attempt they made to fix this inherent issue (against their will due to publisher pressure to be fair to your point) is the difficulty slider. Not only do I think that doesn't really work to fix the issue, I'd not be surprised if it made the issue worse, as I'm pretty sure more people lower the difficulty because they feel overwhelmed (which I agree with you feeling overwhelmed is a necessity for the meta narrative to work) and subsequently miss out on what they could have gotten had they prevailed, then people who wouldn't have finished the game otherwise lowered the difficulty and then had a great experience. The difficulty slider is exactly what you seem to be talking about and for it I'd agree, it's a net negative. It barely increases the amount of people who can have the experience while risking the quality of the experience for most of those who can enjoy it.

Please just assume I'm not a retard who doesn't understand that the difficulty is integral to the experience. I get that.

This is a sickness that needs to be expurged from peoples minds. Things do not need to conform to mass appeal. If you take something niche and twist it to be more popular youre changing it from what those people enjoyed in the first place. Whether you personally consider it do be watering down or not is completely subjective. Just let P2 stand at it is, with all its flaws and all its shine. It does not need to appeal to any more people than it does now, except commercially. Again if you want shit with mass appeal you have AAA games and yearly releases and FOTM slop. You either want to dumb the game down or you want people to have better taste. There isnt a world where P2 is the game i loved that is also loved by the masses. Im really not assuming that, im not assuming anything. I can see that you have this belief that P2 would be a better game if it somehow retained its identity and broadened its appeal.

Not only do I not think thats possible, I think its simply not true. I love P2 for reasons that are probably a bit different than the reasons someone else might love it. Maybe if it was just as mechanically difficult, but maybe it AAA graphics or maybe it had a more generic soundtrack or maybe it had anime artstyle or maybe whatever. Those would all affect the mood of the game and therefore would affect my enjoyment of it, what i got out of it. Maybe the devs instead of releasing Pathologic 2 that we got they released a better game, objectively if such a thing exists, and i end up loving it too. I still would have been robbed of loving P2, even if i got an objectively better game that more people can enjoy, i still would have missed out on something that i possibly could have enjoyed more.

I think youre not undertstanding how what youre arguing is anti-art. Art does not need to be perfect in order to be beautiful. P2 could have better, more fluid combat and run better and these would all be good changes, but those are really secondary. P2 is itself a reimagining of P1, and theres a good number of people that STILL prefeer P1. I havent played P1 because it sounds boring to me, but Im perfectly content with it being what it is, im just glad we have P2 and P3, and im also glad P3 is vastly different from P2, despite initially not being sold on the idea at first. Maybe someday ill play P1 and i'll end up loving it in a different way i love P2, but i dont think P1 should be changed to be more like P2. I'll try to articulate what I mean one more time. I might still be wrong, that's totally fine:
I watched a lot of let's plays of the game because I became somewhat obsessed with it. Usually these were on youtube and by small channels, so not livestreamed (as that'd change the experience) and without a chat. In those I saw a lot of people give up on the game for various reasons. Some, frankly, were simply the players not being the right person for this type of game. People who didn't care to try to understand the setting. People who didn't read properly. People who were too ADHD to deal with not constantly having a 100% clear map marker.
For all of these, I don't think you could make the game more appealing without ruining what makes it great.

However, there were those who seemed to be genuinely inquisitive and interested and yet failed a lot more than me. For the most illustrative example I'd mention those players who weren't used to "video games" as a general concept as much as I was. They lacked the shared language of games, basic concepts like understanding what you can and can't interact with in a video game world. Camera control. Their ability to interact with the (admittedly janky) fighting system. For these people, who did everything right in my opinion except just being worse at gaming as a skill than me, it felt sad that they'd not be able to have the experience I had. Ways to make it easier for them without making it easier for everyone could have broadened appeal without sacrificing impact. Think of a tutorial more like half life where more stuff is shown rather than told. Adaptive fighting where AI doesn't pummel you if you don't understand positioning.

It's easy to think of those who don't care for the message and frankly fuck those people. If you cater to them what you get is basically ubisoft games, and I'm sure none of us want that.
But I can't help but feel that the start of 2 especially could do with some more ways to show these people these things. Maybe that'd ruin the disjointed feel of the tutorial which I adore in its own way to set the tone of the world as metaphorical and weird, in which case it'd be unavoidable.

It's more common than you think. Suicidality is often not really a rational position to begin with.
I'm still in the earlygame, but it feels like he cares about defeating death more because of the prestige than the actual result of living longer. You can heavily abuse the mechanics of the twin Shabs - in the Maw, for example, one of them always spawns pretty close to the entrance from the Stone Yard direction. If it's the fake one you can just exit the district and re-enter and you've got a 50/50 dice roll each time on it being the real one. I only did this once to test it.

Ok so my paranoia that I might run out of amalgam in the late game just compelled me to do a 2 hour survey of thea town to try and work out more of the mechanics.
Here is what I learned:

I guess the most significant warning I can offer from this is that you could softlock yourself by going back to Day II (and likely Day I but I've not been back to it yet) by having used most of your amalgam already, but having already broken the mirrors around town in a previous run through that day.
Obviously post Day II it's less of an issue because you can treat infected, even if that comes at a risk - it feels like the best mitigation at that point is to repeat the same day to build up tradeable resources and fill your inventory with every strength of drug to increase your chances of successful treatment.

On day 2 I found a house absolutely covered in plague mold in the Gut district (not Isidor's house), didn't seem to bother people too much.

I tried to play Pathologic 2. At the very start got to the warehouse, then when I went to a friend's house some dude attacked me and I killed him by accident, prompting 4 other dudes to attack and kill me.

The game's bugged, fellas... Eva's missing, and the Caretaker is trying to help me find her, but the trail of butterflies goes cold as soon as I leave the Stillwater house. Going back to day 1, Daniil is trapped in a locked room inside Stillwater, astrally projecting outside his body, with no Eva to talk to (I'm assuming she's supposed to talk to you here since that's what the thought map says). As excited as I am to get through the rest, I'm putting the game on hold for a while until IPL figures these glitches out.

There's a door on the left side of the stillwater region that you go through, then you go through a room and into the cathedral and up the left staircase to the roof where Eva is.
For me it didn't work the first save attempt, I deleted my save and did a whole new run and it worked without issues. Eva living isn't required for an ending anyway, you don't interact with her much after day 10 regardless. You should be able to talk to a tragedian instead of Eva even if she is dead on day 1.

I got the miracle seeker ending. I really want to play more but so many quests are buggy that I'd rather just wait for when the game is stable and then I'll retry getting other endings.
There are so many instances where the game does not recognize a change in the state of a quest, even if it was fully finished in a previous day, for example Peter Stamatine getting hanged, even when I acquitted him, and also got the Poly blueprint (he is marked as dead in the journal, but he shows up in the game still)
Another is Kaminsky should have died since i didnt tip him off regarding the Stamatin assasination attempt. On day 11 I saw his corpse with Andrey dabbing over the cadaver but then he shows up alive in Day 12 for the dinal decision???

shabnak isnt that bad, most of the difficulty is finding the flower. After you have the projectile you jsut camp a bonfire and blast her if its not the green wisp.
I got really lucky with the hunting and only encountered the fake shabnak in Day 11.

Anything's fine as long as it gets you to day XI. Infection and unrest levels on the decree board determine that. Each shabnak you kill does permanently decreases infection, so it helps, but it's not necessary.

You don't really need to kill it for the story unless you want to get the later days faster. It reduces infection, but unlocking stronger policies and solving the hospital puzzles does basically the same thing.
