If anything s&box's big failing is actually being closer to gmod by expecting the userbase to run servers for their games. Roblox's big success was basically saying "don't worry about servers, we'll run those for you, just focus on makign the games". All facepunch had to do was say "don't worry about servers, we'll run that for you, and unlike roblox it won't be a laggy mess".
