>>730801795>>730802084I never once play an "art game" that was fun or much of a game at all. It generally awful for the media it is working in. A walking sim of an old women sitting on a bench to die might been insightful if I wasn't already asleep by holding the joystick down looking at nothing. "art games" fail at being games so they also end up fail at being art as they couldn't even use the media successfully. Games that are good from the start might have a chance to become art though. Art is subjective but a lot of people seem to think OoT is a masterpiece (for it time at least) for example. I know 4chan love to piss and shit themselves over the example I am about to bring but Omori have a much higher chance of being art simply because it is a game real people are willing to play. (I said real people so thankfully it doesn't matter if /v/ plays it or not). I personally think Omori is shit (I have the right to that opinion as I had actually played it unlike most of /v/) but it have merits as a game which can open up a debate and discussion over it.

>>730802186>Sounds like projection on your partNo, it's not. The fact its dicksuckers got offended when Soulja Boy DARED to laugh and joke while playing the game instead of treating it like some moving piece of art says enough.>y-y-you just can't expect his games to sell well!!!Yeah, because his games are shit. >>730803020it really doesnt matter if the screen is pointless or not for newcomers. The point is, that criticism he makes highlights how pretentious he is, taking something quite trivial and ranting while in a position of superiority like he is the video game development encyclopedia
>>730800432Whenever I develop some respect for him I start remembering that he not only made Braid but also pretended that it's an intellectual master piece of art and craftsmanship afterwards.
>>730803071Like what? There were a few "play alongside your pre-recorded self" flash platformers back in the day. Pic related springs to mind as the most braid-like. Thing is with braid that was just one of the world gimmicks and Braid's had a bit more complexity given the additional shadow rules that world had where as most of these games were just "you need to do thing while your past self does other thing".
>>730803253Thought experimentYou call Braid pretentious. If I thought Braid was NOT pretentious, how would I go about proving that?

>>730803253>No, it's not. Braid back then was getting sucked off for being PROOF that "indie gaymes are le art"And why are you giving a fuck about what they said? Again projection. You're allowing them calling the game the art to cause yourself to think the game is trying to be art yourself. You were perfectly capable of looking at a game and seeing the gameplay and you let a bunch of games journalists change your judgement. You saw a game that was filled with gameplay and you refused to see it as that. Even worse you refused to see it as that because you listened to what a bunch of game journalists said.

I admire JBlow, he's autistic enough to really care about games and curse the pieces of shit he hires who produce nothing, but he's not autistic enough to be completely unviable. He says some interesting things (although 75% of what he says doesn't stand up to closer scrutiny, but that doesn't matter, he's not a philosopher, he's just a programmer giving his takes on life and the world). The Witness is a good puzzle game, contrary to what many people say. I think that video by that pseudo-critic youtuber who has never made a game in his life but thinks he knows everything about game design, distorted people's opinions, because unfortunately human beings draw conclusions based on narratives, and whoever comes up with the coolest story sound more convincing.
>>730823712>It's much less needed of a game and it's clear you missed the boat.I fundamentally disagree with this statement. I don't believe that there ever exists a demand for Sokoban-like games. General demand for puzzle games? Sure. But no particular genre, or perhaps more general genres like "first person puzzler" and "tabletop puzzler" (funnily enough, The Witness is both). >>730828582You actually make some pretty good points. I agree that Order of the Sinking Star isn't immediately eye catching like the games you've listed. However, that doesn't mean that it's a guaranteed flop. What makes me say this? Isles of Sea and Sky. It's just a Sokoban with lots of mechanics and an overworld where every screen is a puzzle. >>730800432I was thinking about learning some solo gamedev stuff, but will I end up looking like that? I want to keep my twinkish physique.
>>730800432His games are terrible and he's terrible.
>>730830951i made into the mountain. before entering, i promised myself i'd quit if i found the same grid boards inside. i'm by no means a genre enthusiast, in addition to the witness i've only played baba, ssr, snakebird and zach games. but out of those the witness is the only one i did not complete.
man i wish he'd make a pokemon game
>>730800551(Yooooouuuu)
>>730800432what's good about his games?I only played like 5 minutes of braid and stopped cause it was ugly.also not having kids for your passion job is fucking stupid.I am at least socially retarded.
>>730833257He had extremely lucky timing with his first two games (caught the first big indie wave + the first big humble bundle wave with braid, and caught a massive market void for exploratory art-forward first person puzzlers when the witness finally dropped>also not having kids for your passion job is fucking stupid. He's a pretty abrasive character and mostly just wants to autistically hyperfocus on work, it's probably for the best.
>>730823712>Unlike back then, we had and have really good Sokoban competitors in this space this time.Yeah it's a shame we're born with a hard limit on how many Sokobans we can play in a single lifetime.>that -ed in worked has a funny smell to me, smells of "non-amicable partings">look, I hired an innovator to work on my lesser simulacra, maybe greatness of a person can rub off on lesser product!Jesus you're full of it.
>>730825261>which we already have and have better versions ofI forgot we were talking to a time traveller who has already played it.
And yet his games are all dogshit.
>>730828582I have very little stake in this I just hopped in the thread because I played the Witness earlier this year and it blew me away - I'm curious because you have fairly eloquent takes and you sound like you have a breadth of experience, yet you say it bored you. Do you have recommendations in a similar genre? Is there a wellspring of Witnesslikes that just aren't pushed in conventional media outlets so they're obscure? I struggle to imagine in my current state anything else scratching the same itch.
>>730833769>Yeah it's a shame we're born with a hard limit on how many Sokobans we can play in a single lifetime. The hard limit is>pulling out your wallet for a sokoban that isn't doing jack shit new and that you've already played a half-dozen timesI'm afraid you'll find this limit quite hard.>Jesus you're full of it.Takes full to shit on full>>730833818the ancients were right>>730834543all of obra dinn, outer wilds, and blue prince kinda capture a similar first person puzzler vibe since then, and are good.
>>730800432same state really. He doesn't make games very quickly.
>>730834628I've played Outer Wilds, also loved it but thought Witness was generally more polished and engaging. Got a little spoiled on Obra Dinn unfortunately so I've been putting it off, curious if you think it's still worth playing. Blue Prince I have heard good things about and stayed entirely unspoiled thus far. Might be the time to boot it up
>>730834628>pulling out your walletYou're making some pretty retarded assumptions there.
>>730800551*Cries in a dark room*
>>730801419>starts randomly seething about jap devskek, I think I get it nowalso holy shit this guy is obnoxious to listen to
>>730834628I was about to post the same essentially but I was running into stupid ass webm issues
>>730834769Obra Dinn doesn't seem like the kind of game you can get all that spoiled on. At best you might catch wind of one the ways to identify some crewmates.
>>730800432>no wife, no kids, just 100% locked in until he diesThat's the only good thing about this faggot. Here's hoping he will stay the path and not condemn humanity to suffer through his spawn.
>>730834628>putting blue prince above witnessYeah not doing your credibility much favour there.
>>730800432he looks like ghengis khan
oh boy another game where he forces the player to wait an hour to solve a "puzzle"
>>730835225As a lifelong fan of adventure games I really don't understand how anyone thought The Witness was THAT good. Aesthetically feels like an asset flip, any attempt at lore or world building is replaced with shitty readings of mostly bad quotes, the puzzles are repetitive and mind-numbing, your reward for completing puzzles is only ever more puzzles. The "twist" is great but once it's done it's done. It basically feels like the equivalent of an old free flash game.
They're really not sending their best.
>>730801805>Be four hours into a puzzle>Make one mistake>Have to start all over again
>>730836085Doesn't it have rewind?
>>73083608599% of sokobans have an undo button
>>730835842But at the very least it doesn't pad out the length with random chance mechanics.
>>730802941The puzzles and visuals of the world is really great. That's really all you need. But the lore is a cock tease and the "story" is some meta commentary about not everything needing meaning behind it. Mr. Blow's rating is not great.
>>730801037i don't get that webm
>>730830951i got too frustrated when i submitted a solution and it was wrong and it forced me to redo the previous puzzle, which i hadn't memorised yet, so it cascaded down.refunded.
