Ukrainian and Russian is mutually understandable to one another, only difference is them using certain kind of word combinations that the other would have to try and "decypher" the meaning of in some cases but that's about it. They can understand one another. You even have footage from the war shit where captors can communicate with prisoners without any issue.
"Ukrainian" is a sham language made up from Russian to try and give more credence to Ukraine actually being it's own place with it's own people independent of Russia.
