Towards the end of ’00s, the obvious streamlining / casualization trend started taking root. Now big publishers wanted "simple and safe" games made for shitty / non-gamers, meaning mostly casual console FPS games and movie shit revolving around pressing X to do “cool stuff”. This resulted in death of numerous genres and unique play styles.

Now, nearly 20 years later, we got an entire generation of GenZ and A fags who have only ever played Uncharted-style OTS 3rd person action games with lukewarm stealth mechanics, or CoD4 style cinematic FPS games mostly played for the match-making oriented ADHD multiplayer.
They've never had to put any effort into learning how to play a new game, because all of their games, from their childhood to adulthood, look and play exactly the same.

This is why they also get filtered whenever they try just about anything pre-2010s at this point, often crying for more "remakes" of said older vidya, hoping that they'd get downgraded to the modern, rock bottom standards they crawl in.
Happened to Resident Evil, happened to Doom and Final Fantasy. Even in Half-Life, they easily get lost and confused within minutes.

2004 is where i start the Age of Disappointment. that's when you start seeing these games that were immensely hyped but not exactly "beloved" on release.
Sonic '06, Oblivion, Fable. you've also got the most infamous bullshot of all time, the Killzone 2 E3 trailer.
before 2004, we had 3 golden ages in a row.

Not compeltely pertinent, but you can see a good take on the corporatization of early gaming developing process in TRON (1982).
In the movie the good guys win in the end, but that's not how it went in reality

lol
i'm not saying NO good games came out in '04, i'm saying it didn't reach anywhere near the peak highs the previous years did.
1998 is pretty widely considered the actual literal peak of video games.
if you were alive, you know how much better things were before '04. we had the Golden Age of Arcades, followed by the Golden Age of Consoles, followed by the Golden Age of PC Mods. '04 is when the biggest flops started coming.

I replayed Warrior Within for the first time in 20 years last fall and holy shit that game is much, much, much better than I remembered. Funnily enough, despite being remembered as mindless, endless action, it's actually features far more platforming (and far more sophisticated platforming and puzzling) than Sands of Time.

I've always considered the 7th gen to be the beginning of the decline of gaming. It was when consoles mutated from their own unique architecture to just being shitty PC's and developers started really going in on both making games more similar to movies, billing them as cinematic experiences, and when they started aggressively chasing after normalfag bucks.

Old vidya coom thread?

>>730803860
For multiplayer PC, it was right around there, sure, but a lot of things started falling apart around that time too.

7th gen decline started in 2006

The peak of everything video games including video game culture and the games themselves was the period of 1990-2006. The ads were so much more soulful, there were literally video game books, cheat codes, easter eggs, the games were more fun, in my opinion they even looked better than the empty solid oily smooth textures we have today. Video games officially died in 2007 when the iPhone was released and when women starting becoming gamers for the first time. Lol.

The problem is early gamers saw and experienced the change and advancement while current-gen gamers only experienced the same graphics but higher reslution and framerates.

That image perfectly describes exactly what happened.
Not just to gaming though, but more like it precisely demonstrates what happened to our world and life in general.
The transition from "I'm so excited for when things get better in the future" to "You can't afford to eat because we gave all your money to transgender war refugees."
Lol.

i still put the "beginning" at '04, but if you're saying '05 i don't think you're far off.
before 7th gen, exclusives were make or break for consoles. they were the reason to buy one system over the other, they were what gave each one its own flavor and personality. then, with 7th gen, we started entering the war of "features." shit like what did the system avatars look like, how good was the browser, were there cheevos, can you order a pizza from an app, what about social media, etc.
i saw the decline started a little before all that. by the time it was around, it was plain for all to see.

>>730824047
like i said, my argument is not "there were never any good games made after 2003," it's that the decline in quality started around 2004. like i pointed out with the titles i mentioned.
before then, a GLOBALLY hyped and anticipated game flopping was not a frequent occurrence. but it sure was after.

>>730824243
this is another part of it that i think about. zoomers will never know. the oldest of them were literal toddlers back when we were seeing the largest leap in quality there has or will ever be. by the time they were forming memory, we were already seeing diminishing returns.
if you didn't live through the '90s, you don't know how FAST gaming was advancing.
