I don't self-insert when I play games. Call it a lack of imagination but it still feels like someone else, a character in a movie I'm guiding while looking over their shoulder. So the gender I play depends on what fits for the game. In Elder Scrolls I tend to play as a male Argonian or Khajit as I like the idea of a lowly downtrodden peasant from a lesser race rising up to become the hero. In Cyberpunk I play as a woman since sexy female protagonists are a staple of the genre. Worth noting I don't relate to either of these characters as if they're me. It's more like a character I'm getting to know and spending time with. Woman is also better for romance, I don't feel I've gotten anything of value watching some ripped chad fuck the girl I like in front of me. I'd rather watch two girls at it.

I can't relate to characters in video games as if they were literally me. I'm a nerdy, scrawny, weak, 100% heterosexual male person. I can't relate to a chad warrior knight or a ruthless mercenary because it's so far removed from who I am. I can admire and empathize with them as characters but I cannot self-insert as one. I can barely even create a character who looks like me because I'm not ruggedly handsome and don't have large biceps or pectorals. So, I cannot self-insert in most games. I play instead as something pretty far removed from me in order to avoid the dissonance there. I play as a non-human race wherever it's available, or as a female where only humans are available.
