royal guard and quicksilver are stronger then anything vergil can do and if you're playing a version of the game with style switching it's not even close.

5 moves on two weapons + two guns + style and the ability to animation cancel in several different ways means you actually make combos instead of mashing preset strings like every other game that came out after DMC1

i never used anything other than trickster i felt so slow without it, but i was playing the ps2 version without switching

if you tap the royal guard block you can cut the recovery of like 75% of dantes moves down heavily. it leads to goofy shit like turning the shotgun/rifle into full auto and lets you do similar stuff trickster does where instead of cutting your combo short to dodge you cut your combo short and can then freely jump/roll out of the way.

they added a lot more recovery to it in the games after this one. they didn't realize how fucked up it was in this game because they added it halfway through development

oh yeah and quicksilver can be used at literally any time you aren't taking damage and when time first slows down you're fully invincible for like a full second so it's just super trickster, quickly turning it on and back off like you're a jojo character barely uses any meter.

I personally liked quickswapping to E&I to rapidfire the shotgun and Spiral. No need for a specific style then.
Shame there's no weird quirks like DMC1's shotgun fitting faster if you do a full rotation of the joystick between shots
