Multiplayer games are always good all the time if the community is worth it. Every single one would be amazing if it were occupied by the right people. But devs decided psychologically manipulating people to play their game more with tricks like EOM playing into people's worst sides to inflate playercounts, so they are not occupied by the sweatiest bitchful manchildren by choice but by selective breeding and natural evolution. So in turn, no multiplayer game is worth playing.

Multiplayer games are literally always the same shit after you play them for more than a couple hours. Nothing ever changes in them. The only draw they have after that is the social aspect and no one is fucking social in online games anymore because everything is designed to cater to anti-social players (party finders, complex ping systems to replace voice).

Literally the one thing that multiplayer offers over single player at this point is that AI enemies are simply not as multi-faceted and natural as human player enemies in things like shooters, making the skill ceiling infinitely higher for multiplayer skill based games, but giving a shit about being high skill at a game is something almost everyone has experienced and ultimately grows out of.

This is why fighting games are the one multiplayer game with some value btw. While even they have been catering to the anti-social, they still fundamentally require and promote some level of social engagement.

On the other hand I think multiplayer communities have definitely gotten worse. There's a few things I've noticed:

1) For some reason people just don't have any imagination, and suck at roleplaying or just doing something that isn't meta. Take for example Space Station 13. It used to be a game in which role players interacted in a scenario with game elements to keep them busy, it was all about the bizarre interactions of characters and the in lore rules. In 2012, a druggie bum would smash up your bar and the cops would come grab him, beat the shit out of him, and threaten him with being ground into sausage if he didn't turn informant. In today's version of the game that scenario would be played out and the cops and bum would be banned for self-antagging a beating a compliant non violent prisoner.

2) Ovcompetitiveness brought on by the mainstream-ification of esports means you get match made with faggot losers that literally spend half their waking hours doing pro practice regimes. An example of a little of no 1 and no 2 I noticed was in Garry's Mod. I tried some TTT for nostalgia last year and besides a couple decent servers, the only ones that weren't weird discord clubs where noone was actually paying attention to games (usually with a e-girl that was being worshipped by simps) were being played with max efficiency. Traitors didn't try to be sneaky or cause any chaos or lean into trickery, they just grabbed the best gun they could find and started flicking out in the open like it was just another game of Arms Race, with no regard if they lived or died.

I have no problem with 1v1 competitive games. I still enjoy playing SF6 and AoE2.
I have no problem with large scale multiplayer games.

My issue is something like Dota 2. Dota 2 is probably the perfect game to upset you because your individual performance is very important but cannot carry a game by itself and you NEED teammates to succeed. However, it is possible for you or your teammate to play so poorly that you lose because of that.
It is just particularly shitty that someone on your team can perform so badly that nothing you do does anything. It is also shitty because that poor performance can be ONE mistake after 70 minutes. It is insane.

competitive multiplayer games are for teenagers/early 20's without a lot of responsibilities. It's not that they're time intensive per say but you need consistent time slots every week or your "fall behind". Once you have a full time job, a family, house, responsibilities in general; you just don't have the time to keep up with other people, especially the sweat lords.

plus I don't have to be slave to the fotm or even care if the game I enjoy is popular or not. I also get to play things way after release date if I didn't pick them up at the time because I was too busy and have to worry about my experience being diminished because of it.

Ive got thousands of hours in sea of thieves and as fun mechanically as that game was (because they updated all the fun out at this point) the multiplayer fucking sucked. I wanted to fight pirate ships not hear someone cry over hot mix or get yelled at by my team mates. I was great at the game too, but the people I was playing with ruined it. There was so much fucking behind the scenes drama and petty fighting it was ridiculous. They also played other multiplayer slop too theyd rope me into. I find single-player games a lot more stressful.
They seem obsessed with trying to catch you out with things like "wrong" story choices, missable items/collectibles, true endings that you need to replay for, etc.
