Games gained nothing by trying to improve on this level of graphicsIt's like movies perfecting on-location shooting, models, practical VFX, and then throwing it all away for CGI and greenscreens
>>730832605Scathing, hot take OP. Realistic graphics = le bad I agree. Old game good. This is a very underdiscussed topic on /v/ - video games.

>>730832605I think the 6th generation is where it's at visually. It was the only era where you could display almost anything you wanted while also being able to skip things like specular and normal maps (although some 6th gen games do absolutely use specular maps).
The problem doesn't stem from technical fidelity or fancy rendering techniques or some shit. It's just that modern games have shit art direction. Developers focus on making something technically impressive first and aesthetics are an afterthought. Level readability are also an afterthought, they sneeze grass and hyperrealistic rocks everywhere and you as the player don't even know what you can interact with anymore. Which is why they smear yellow point over everything. In old games the geometry was more easily readable so that wasn't neededI'm gay!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>730834297Normies cried for realism, and boards of investors demanded it over and over again. The death of style was the end result.
Let's be honestYou don't need more
