New to these games. Is it true that the HD2D versions should be played in chronological order: 3, 1, 2?

I've seen people mention it because the plot was restructured/re-told in a way to where you should start with 3. Which is also why they released 3 before 1+2.

Is that true?

HD 1&2 are completely new games wearing DQ 1 and 2's skin.

DQ3 remake literally ends on this screen so it's safe to say you should play 3 first.
DQ3 remake is very faithful to the original compared to 1 and 2 which both take a ton of liberties

I wouldn't say completely new from what I've seen. They have the same towns, same world map, etc. just extra content.

Anyway, does that mean I'm supposed to play 3-1-2?

haven't played the remakes yet, but if you were to play the originals, I'd recommend playing in release order

I have often heard the original DQ3 was the best so that would probably be the one to play
from the admittedly little I know I don't think you would miss much skipping 1/2 unless you're just interested in older games
me personally?
I played 4/5 DS versions liked them, tried 6 didnt care, played 11 on steam, running through the story was fun, 3rd arc was a bit tedious
you could probably just try 3 HD2D and if you want more do 1/2 HD2D or a different 1

>It has the same towns
And completely different game content.

That's like saying Final Fantasy 10 with FF1's world map is FF1.

Yeah, for the HD-2D remakes, you play 3 before 1/2. They added in some extra content if you play 3 first.
If you're just playing the old versions, play it in order.

When the games were originally released back on Famicom/NES all those years ago, it was supposed to be a big surprise that you were playing as the Hero that was revered so much in the first two games and to this day in THOSE versions of the game, and their SNES remakes, it's best to play in the 1, 2, 3 order to preserve that.
The HD-2D games restructure things such that new plot threads are started in 3 that continue into 1+2, which also now contains many more references to 3's events that weren't there before. Playing HD-2D in the 1, 2, 3 order will just leave you with a bunch of scenes where you don't really know what they're talking about. Word of God also that you should be playing 3HD first.

Anon, every version of Dragon Quest 3 has done that.

so 312 is the way to go?

Yes, you'll be missing a lot of context in 1 and 2, especially 2, if you don't play 3 first.
Horii himself said that for the remakes, 3 would be the proper starting point, listen to the man.

The above anon is right, play in chronological order of 3>1>2.
3 is also the easier game to get into since you'll have a 4 person party and can use the Helping Hands mechanic within the same playthrough (seed boost a generic carry with alternating saves).
1 is the harder game since you're by yourself and will kick your shit in if you're not exploring for the hidden treasure: pots, barrels, bags on the wall, bookshelves, drawers, cabinets.

You know how much difference there is between Resident Evil and Resident Evil Remake? Multiply that 2-3 times and you have the level of difference between DQ1&2 original and DQ1&2 HD.
>>
>>730843470
I haven't played either Resident Evil game. How different are the DQ remakes by that comparison?
>>

It's odd to me, but actually playing the remakes makes that pretty obvious. For years I would tell people to play 1 and 2 first for the payoff of 3's ending, but at this point it's as much of a spoiler as Aerith dying anyways. I was fortunate enough to play 3 unspoiled and it blew my mind as a kid.

They're different enough that most people will say that both are worth playing because the remake does so much different.
The general design of REmake is in such a way to specifically catch veterans off guard and play with their expectations, there's a whole new mechanic with zombies coming back to life as a stronger variant if you don't burn their corpses (assuming you didn't get a crit that popped their head), and the fuel needed to burn stuff is in very limited supply plus you're only allowed to carry two uses worth on you at a time, they also changed the way the shotgun worked so that aiming it at a head wasn't a guaranteed head pop anymore. On top of that there's also new mechanic in defense items that let you instantly break out of a grab once per item you have. There's also a new boss fight and areas added to the game around the halfway point that adds lore to the person who built the mansion your in and what happened to him and his family. There's also another area added that does more with the sharks, there's new rooms throughout the mansion, etc.

They're totally different games deep down despite looking the same on a surface level.

That's pretty interesting. And I do know the original creator was involved in it, just like with Dragon Quest. It wasn't just some random remake. Maybe one day in the future I'll go back and play DQ1-3 on SNES, after HD2D.

It was always fun to do a low-level attempt to try and grab the armor while running from everything in the first game.
