Everything outside the main story gameplay was serviceable. Not enough variety in gun play or what enemies could do. Not enough incentive to be an outlaw. Money is worthless for a story that harps on about how broke the gang is. Hunting was the best part.

I also thought making money was too easy. But I think they didn't want it to be too difficult or slow so players wouldn't get frustrated whenever they wanted to buy stuff.

Its story is tied to the GTA format which works better. A criminal coming up and living a lavish lifestyle for it to crumble makes more sense. Its gay to say but the game needed more misery. Going to stores and realizing early on that the only way to make enough was robbing people/stealing supplies or fully committing to mountain man hunting to make all your own gear would naratively fit better.

I personally play lots of VNs and story driven games, and enjoy those. RDR2 is a huge game and relatively story-light, because the majority of the game is filled with sluggish, unresponsive, and incredibly shallow game play. It's mind boggling how R* spends hundreds of millions of dollars making their games and they perfect nearly everything about it except for the actual game.

The game suffers from bloat in general and should've ended after youre in the mansion in the swamp area. There's a shit ton of unnecessary missions that dont really add much to the story and they feel more like side quests that were made mandatory otherwise every character wouldn't get some type of depth added to them, when they dont fucking need it.

In terms of production values and presentation it is still peerless some 6-7 years on from release (fucking how long?). No game has released that's as polished, graphically or technically as impressive as what R*managed to do with RDR2.
The story is okay, the characters are okay. The overall 'vibe' is fantastic, just riding your horse around exploring/hunting is very good on it's own.
My main criticism is that the story drags on too long and is perhaps too repetitive. Dutch gets fucking annoying after a while. The mission gameplay also just isn't that good. R* pushed the envelope in terms of presentation but is essentially still building their mission gameplay around a formula that is decades old and was just about barely serviceable when it was first used in GTA3.
All you day is:
>ride here to talk to NPC
>get mission to ride all the way over here, often with some lengthy dialogue
>get to destination and have a shootout
>ride all the way back/elsewhere with more dialogue

Rinse and repeat 100+ times throughout the main story. They need to do better with GTA VI and inject some variety into it. They need to open up the mission structures to allow you to approach missions differently, more inventively... A little more immersive sim than the ancient A-B-shootout-B-C stuff from this game.
So yeah, on the one hand it's peerless and still technically a marvel to behold and on the other it's an extremely dated game that is actually so boring I refuse to play through it again.

When you freeroam and explore/do what you want it's amazing. Tons of cool easter eggs and sights to see. and it's fun just being a cowboy and taking on bandits while hunting and living off the land.
But the game DEMANDS you stop having fun after a while and sends characters after you to complain about you not visiting the camp in ages, plus the story is shit.

To add to this I'll say that because of the story and mission gameplay issues I actually much preferred the online as it reduced the game to pretty much just exploration and added some slight RPG mechanics to everything that made it really 'comfy' to roam around parts of the world, collecting stuff, having shootouts with bandit groups and levelling up to acquire better guns and equipment.
Unfortunately, R* completely fucking ruined the experience with their unbelievably heeby business practices and turned the entire thing into a massive pay to win grindfest that nuked all fun sense of progression and made it intolerable to play.
Between that and a sudden deluge of hacking chinks in every lobby it became unplayable and I gave up on it.
Perhaps the RP scene has breathed some life into the online maybe I'll check it out at some point.
