Wands are supposed to be like conductors, able to channel a wizard's power into a single source they can control. Which is why pairing a wizard with an adequate wand is important otherwise you get Ron in CoS problems. And it is why in the books only the top, top level wizards are shown to be able to do wandless magic while still being in control.
