I honestly want Nintendo to go back to the GameCube art style. Keep the open worlds and sandbox levels if they have to but give it the GameCube art style. I honestly think Mario Kart Double Dash is the best looking Mario Kart

is it saturation vs desaturation? Is it depth fog? Is it CRT vs LCD fog?

I'm surprised I haven't seen zoomers tried to use Bliss as a liminal space horror thing yet.
>>

in BOTW's case it was to a large extent their method of faking GI. they used a cubemap generated near the player as a source for indirect lighting on all objects, so if the player is standing on a bright patch of terrain the entire world will have bright bounce lighting from below for example. in many scenes you end up with colors literally only in the upper half of the brightness spectrum. anti-soul gas often made the issue worse but it wasn't the root cause or the worst part.

they could have fixed this with stronger ambient occlusion (blocking / reducing the indirect light) and post-processing (upping the contrast of the final image), but they didn't for whatever reason. I often wondered if they maybe used strange TVs in the office that come with very high contrast settings from the factory so they thought the game looked fine during development.

But shrines are good optimization ?
Botw would never have ran above 10fps if every shrine was part of the open world.
I wish they remembered that with totk dungeons.

>I often wondered if they maybe used strange TVs in the office that come with very high contrast settings from the factory so they thought the game looked fine during development.
There's something going on with a lot of Japanese devs when it comes to brightness shit, they are terrified of using black anywhere, probably because dogshit LCDs have awful color reproduction.
>>
>>730850221
It's an industry thing from back in the day where they would always say "never use complete black." The idea was that absolute black is hard to see on tvs and may cause eye strain, some even say it's aesthetically unappealing. Look at old spritesheets of snes games and they rarely if ever used actual black.
Modern Jap tvs also have way too many settings that fuck with the image out of the box since the average jap thinks blasts of color makes for a good image.

>Modern Jap tvs also have way too many settings that fuck with the image out of the box since the average jap thinks blasts of color makes for a good image.
To be fair, that's not specifically a jap problem. Literally all TVs come with a million dogshit settings for retards these days.

Low saturation just removes color, it doesn't also remove contrast
Top is literally zero saturation
Bottom is the "lightness" slider in photoshop. Basically makes everything whiter and more washed out, including the contrast

Open world is bad world design unless you truly want nothing in it, to serve the purpose of desolation and decompression for the greater experience.
Once you start populating it with things to do, you are just treating it as a very unfocused and uncoordinated level select that would be better replaced with a hub or even just a list-based level select.

i think the open world shit just comes down to how you like your dopamine cycles. If you like them steady, you’ll want a more focused environment, if you like a more wavy pattern open world is perfect unless it’s too repetitive

i like coming across random bandit camps and planning an attack or stealth killing everyone while they sleep, and then just go on my way

Yes, but it's often overdone and used to hide imperfections, render distance, shadows etc. Same as with post effects like grain and DoF or why ps3 era games loved blur, to mask barely 30 FPS.

resale value. strong colors are divisive. the same person will like one strong color but dislike another. meanwhile everyone can accept a black or silver car, hence higher resale value.

Each level of blur is going to wash out the color. Since graphics haven't improved in 15 years the engine company sells a new blur every year and the game company marketing thinks this is great and markets that to equally retarded consumers.
These should always all be disabled and if need be in graphics card settings.

Why did they never teach the fucking basic of the basic 'light source must be behind the viewer and pointed toward the subject'. You see this shit all the time but 'lava' as a lightsource becomes physically painful, especially if they double up on the fuckery with heat distortion effects.
Another thing that came up in the newest Warframe patch is constantly changing brightness. The new mode goes in and out of dark caves and it's fucking awful.
