Sony Computer Entertainment of America was considering using the name Playstation X originally, because their marketing team thought it sounded 'edgier'. Internally, the Playstation was called the Playstation-X during development to separate it from the previous SNES-Playstation add-on. Some magazines caught on to that and nicknamed it the PSX, even though it was never an official abbreviation by Sony. PSX.exe is still found in the headers of a lot of PS1 games.
PSX was only used by a small amount of people online (and the internet was much smaller back then and ofc social media was non existent). Everyone in the real world called it the Playstation and Sony always branded it as that.

This came from a Japanese mail mail-order company in the back of Die hard GameFan magazine from November 1994. It was advertising he launch of the Japanese PS-X, as you could import it early from Japan. There was a point where Magazines would use the PS-X acronym. It may have come from some leaks through Sony about their upcoming machine. SCEA did refer to it as the PS-X internally.

I was born in 1987 and was alive for the height of gaming in the 90s. Nobody called it a PSX. It was just PlayStation.
