Nobody called it a GCN
it was a abreviation for Magazines because all of them used a 3 letter abreviation you smelly nigger
>>
all i remember is that it was often called psx on websites and in real life it was simply playstation or some slang word for it depending where you lived. doesn't really matter.
might as well argue about ps1. nobody called it ps1 and there's no reason to call it that now. it's simply playstion or ps. the slim model was officially named psONE though. so it gets confusing.
>>
>>730860495
Microsoft wanted people to call the Xbone "The One" but guess what, no one on this planet has ever called it that and even if they did no one would know what they were talking about. Because that's not what it's called

>>
>>730861027
it's true though. it was always "playstation", sometime "the play" and it only became "psone" when they released the slim version when the 2 was already out. "psx" is a magazine title at best, a magazine that used the word "playstation" whenever they talked about the console

Cute! Where do you think his post says that?

Back when it was launched all the developers called it "PSX" - because that was what the documentation and most of the tools used (I.E. the C compiler was called "ccpsx", the assemblers were called "aspsx" and "asmpsx", all the platform tools were in a directory called "psx", the program you ran to talk to the debugger stub on the target box was called "psxcons", etc.
Later versions of the system library removed mention of "psx" from the documentation, but they remained as part of the tool names and the installation paths right until the system was discontinued.
Apparently the use of "psx" rather than "ps-x" was because originally the tools were hosted on a Sony NEWS workstation which ran Unix. Since '-' is the switch character in the shell, it would have had to be escaped every time you used it, which would have been very annoying, so they just dropped it.
The boot ROM in the console uses both "PS-X" and "PSX" - the default boot file that gets run if the disc doesn't contain a system.cnf is "PSX.BIN" and the magic number (located at byte offsets 0x8 to 0xf) in every PlayStation executable is the ASCII codes for the string "PS-X EXE".
So yes, it really was the name the system was called, but you would have to be as ancient as me to actually remember that.

But the argument is that most people at that time referred to it as the PSX, and it has been proven time and again that they did. Anyone who says otherwise is either a) a zoomer who wasn't alive back then, or b) a troll who's just arguing in bad faith.

There are actually a few Playstation games that do say PSX on the back of the jewel case. Sony Computer Entertainment of America was considering using the name Playstation X originally, because their marketing team thought it sounded 'edgier'. Internally, the Playstation was called the Playstation-X during development to separate it from the previous SNES-Playstation add-on. Some magazines caught on to that and nicknamed it the PSX, even though it was never an official abbreviation by Sony. PSX.exe is still found in the headers of a lot of PS1 games.

PSX was only used by a small amount of people online (and the internet was much smaller back then and ofc social media was non existent). Everyone in the real world called it the Playstation and Sony always branded it as that.

GCN was actually an official abbreviation used for North America and Europe. Nintendo used it because NGC caused conflicts with the National Geographic Channel (NGC) or something like that. Nintendo of Europe still uses GCN. Not sure if NOA abandoned it.

The UK and Nintendo of Europe still uses the GCN abbreviation officially. I don;t really see GCN used by Nintendo of American anymore. You can still type 'GCN controller' into a search engine and it ends up with Nintendo's website for a top link. So it must still be used in their's website meta data. But back when the system was still being sold, it GCN was official, and Nintendo would send out memos to online gaming sites, magazines and other gaming media to tell them ti use GCN as an abbreviation. NGC was only ever used in Japan and other Asian regions.

I have never owned a playstation
I have never wanted to own a playstation
The only people who own playstations are kids with divorced parents who tried to buy their love with two birthdays, and niggers who bought it for sports games and the PS2 because it was a cheap DVD player.
playstation continued their legacy of being for complete fucking retarded faggots with the last three consoles having NO GAMES and selling as a status symbol.
Every Playstation IP worth even a cursory glance gets ported to other consoles or PC.

People who called the PS1 the PSX are the kings of all retards, the proto-tards from which all other tards evolved. Retard Prime. They just wanted their horrible purchase to sound edgy and cool because they were jealous of kids with the N64 having a fun time with their many friends and four controller ports, while they sat in a puddle of cat piss, breathing in pitbull hair and cigarette smoke and listening to their stepdad rape their mother in the next room.

What a pedantic thread.
It's an abbreviation.
Out loud you said playstation.
But later sony created the PS1, the little portable white shelled unit that had it's own LCD screen add-on.
People still said playstation, but wrote or typed out psx or ps1 to differentiate the two.
Same thing for when the PS2 released.
People called it playstation 2.
Although every now and again, I do hear people say ps2 out loud when referring to it.
Sort of like when people call the handheld PSP, they don't say playstation portable.
Same thing for the Nintendo DS, it's just called the DS for short.
This site really will argue about anything.

Anon, people have been using PSX to refer to the original PlayStation way before the PSOne got announced.
>>
This came from a Japanese mail mail-order company in the back of Die hard GameFan magazine from November 1994. It was advertising he launch of the Japanese PS-X, as you could import it early from Japan. There was a point where Magazines would use the PS-X acronym. It may have come from some leaks through Sony about their upcoming machine. SCEA did refer to it as the PS-X internally.

PS still sounds like Photoshop to me, and PS1 was a retconned name that didn't happen until after Sony announced the PS2. Nobody called it the PS1 before 1999. It's like how people will now refer to the Switch as the Switch 1, because the Switch 2 exists.
>>
>>730868601
The thread is made by a screeching autist that doesn't like that people use PSX as a term for the PS1. You don't get threads the other way around. People that say PSX don't deride the term PS1 that naturally came to be due to the PS2 eventually being released.
