Due to cutting out the insomnia invasion and the betrayal plot his motivation for proving his loyalty/strength is because Ravus pushes him. That's only 10% of the problems with the story, there is other issues due to scrapped content and last minute rewrites.

The combat was shit but it wasn't really the problem. The real problem is how the game has so much cut and repurposed content thrown in or worked around with no regard for coherency and consistency.The open world fucking sucks and has no purpose, the story once you choose to progress makes it all completely redundant. There are many locations with insane amounts of work put into them oozing with soul you visit for 10 minutes, and then you go into some ps2 looking field with shitty textures where you run around and kill mobs for 9 hours. The story has good characters and an interesting enough plotline, but 90% of the drama and character development occurs off-screen in some retarded film, book or series and you're left feeling scammed. Then it wraps up in the most retarded way possible and you're left wondering if the developers genuinely wanted you to feel insulted by the end.It's not the worst game I've ever played, but it's probably the most disappointing. It's also a nice way to harken back to the original game where healing was giving up that character's turn.

I feel especially bad for the animators, they did an amazing job but it's like the planners/programmers were trying to do them dirty.Oh they animated all these nice camping scenes with the characters? Well too bad, hotels have multipliers so anyone that has half a brain will cash in their level ups there rather than throw away EXP at camps.Oh they created all these spectacular weapon animations for Noctis? Great! The programmers have implemented a ranking system like the DMC series, except instead of incentivising players to vary their combos and getting the most mileage of that work, they've decided they're not going to do that. They've made it so to get a good rank at the end of battle the player has to stand around and fish for blindside attacks and link strikes instead. You know, those attacks that the player has very little control over and will trigger during fights regardless.Oh hey, did you hear about that that little feature that made it into the game where at the very end of Noctis' sprint, you can hit the button at just the right moment to completely refill the sprint bar and allow the player to continue sprinting? It's a fun idea, it's animated nicely, and it even has a unique visual flourish. Well never mind that, somehow no one on the testing team found out that the fastest method of basic travel is actually just mindlessly spamming the jump button over and over. And that's what you're going to see in speedruns. Noctis playing the floor is lava.
