Not everything needs to be complex. Beat em ups are fun because you can just punch a whole lot of dudes in the face and they can be pretty challenging. But the ones I enjoy more are those that have some technical depth or combo potential like streets of rage 4, Fight'n Rage or the Alien vs Predator arcade game.
