this, Sakurai had the foresight to know it was a flash in the pan. they're going under with Mina and won't be making the 3D Shovel game, so he would've aged poorly

Most of this image is flawed to begin with. It's a lot easier for first party characters to be playable with full movesets because Nintendo doesn't have to go through legal hoops like they would with third party characters.

All of the characters on the right deserve Assist Trophy status, except for Shadow who really should have been an echo fighter.
Not a single soul pushing for playable Waluigi is genuine. He is a meme character from top to bottom, and the clamoring for him has always been exclusively for meme value and zero other reason.

People really do forget this. There is going to be a lot of coping and seething when characters like Pauline, Oatchi and Sylux make it in while Doom Guy and Crash don't

>>
>>730886905
While this is true, I think the reason he's so commonly suggested for Smash is because he'd play differently than any of the existing sword characters, including Ganondorf. Does FE have an antagonist who would be a better representative than him? He'd probably still be the best.
>>
>>730883612
Left characters have no cultural impact while the right are all iconic except golden son and shovel guy.
>>
>>730888258
why the fuck should Crash be in Smash?
Exactly what Nintendo exclusive did it have that would justify it's inclusion?
And it's not like Crash is actually that popular a character
>>
>>730883984
Characters take a lot of work to make, so in this sense roster slots are finite.
>Melee had 10 fully original new characters, not counting Dr. Mario, Pichu, Falco, and Roy
>Brawl had 17, not counting Wolf
>4 had 15, not counting Dark Pit and Lucina, and 4 DLC characters
>Ultimate had 6, not counting Daisy, Richter, Dark Samus, Chrom, Isabell, or Ken, and 11 DLC characters
Ultimate's decision to bring everyone back put a serious dent in the base game roster, and it only made up the difference with DLC. It had fewer new characters than Melee did.
>>
>>730883535
Zero’s a unique situation in which you can really go either way on either version. Ideally, I would prefer to have X and Zero to share a slot together with a swap function like X8 but I get why that wouldn’t be a popular decision.
>>
>>730889061
Oh wait, Brawl is 16, I forgot Lucas. Yes, Toon Link is a distinct character.
>>
>>730889138
If you call toon link a distinct character, so should the others. Ness and lucas are more distinct from eachother than toon link and link.
>>
>>730889287

>>730882196
Funny how whoever made this image decidedly chose not to include ANY female Assist Trophy characters as examples of “characters we could have gotten instead.”

>>730888258
This. We have 3 games in a row of primarily shill picks, and people still don't get it.

I wouldn't mind that cause I want both X and Zero but I couldn't see Sakurai and the Smash Team adding both of them at the same time
>>
>>730889061
Should also count young link and ganondorf for melee.
I personally think ssb needs to remove some characters. Keep echoes because they're great additions, adding a variation system to the game without shitty customization.
>>
Based, fuck rosterfags and third party niggers. Game and Watch GOD btw
>>
>>730885667
Incineroar's moveset isn't creative, his animations are just very expressive.
>jab
Typical 3-hit jab
>ftilt
Typical heavy poke, like Bowser's or Ganondorf's
>utilt
Typical arcing anti-air hitbox
>dtilt
Typical low % launcher
>nair
Typical lingering nair
>bair
Typical kill move bair
>dair
Typical spike dair
And so on. His only unique aspects are his counter mechanic (which is, sadly, still a counter) and his side B. Dsmash has a lot of hurtbox displacement like K. Rool's, also.
>>
>>730889928
I forgot them, my mistake. Ganondorf does feel very different from Falcon due to the mechanics of Melee, though. Young Link, not so much.
>>
>>730882196
Smash will never be great again until Nintendo stops using it as a designated shilling platform for games nobody gives a fuck about and goes back to treating it like an All Stars game.
>>
>>730888830
Bayo's first game wasn't a Nintendo exclusive, therefore she shouldn't have been put in.
>>
>>730890063
There are no "all stars" left in Nintendo's IPs
>>
>>730888258
>Adding Doom Guy
Why? If they did, they'd have to make sure he's kid friendly so no super shotgun or minigun. And Doom's not popular in Japan which plays a vital role in who is chosen.

>why the fuck should Crash be in Smash?
He shouldn't be in, but what tends to happen is when one character gets in, people gravitate to the next one. The people asking for Crash were people who were asking for Banjo, they got Banjo, and then moved onto the next character. The Crash Trilogy came out around that time (or maybe it came out on Switch) so it was the next logical jump for them. Basically they are the originators of the schromblo blimblo meme. Of course, what they forget is a lot of the reason Nintendo went for popular picks is they had the Smash Ballot to work off of but nothing after that. They probably don't even know there are people that want Crash. Its also a reason the next game is going to be way more Nintendo shilling.
>Added everyone that people asked for one way or another
>Nintendo wants to push its IPs and Smash is a great way to do that
I could see the next game dumping third party characters for that reason. The Smash discussion right now is kind of like how Mario Kart was before world. Everyone was going back and forth about "Nintendo Kart" and the game we got wasn't even close to that
>>
>>730889960
So none of the characters in the roster are creative, got it.
>>
Thank god dlc stopped before they announced engage. Otherwise we'd have another fire emblem rep with alear.
>>
>>730890518
I don't care about Crash but he is more iconic than 50% of the roster at this point, maybe more. What zoomers call "scrimblo blimblo" as you put it are actually extremely recognizable characters that they simply weren't alive for in most cases. And yes, they deserve a slot way more than some forced advertisement like Incineroar or pretty much every FE character after Robin.

Well there are some good options, in general major antagonists are a bit more varied than protagonists
Lyon is a monster summoner, necromancer and general dark magic user that is also host to a demon(is from a game that has nothing is smash and is one of the things people like the most about Sacred Stones)
Edelgard is a major antagonist in 3/4 routes in her game(final boss in one even)[but also main protagonist in her route] and she is a heavily armored axe user (is from the most popular game in the franchise)
Medeus the first antagonist of the series is a dragon (main antagonist in like 4 games because of sequels and remakes)
Arvis is an armored fire mage (there are a lot of rumors about his game getting a remake)
Veronica is a villain in the first few books of FEH and she is a staff and magic user predominantly, notable she is always a mounted except in engage and has the power to force contracts so others fight for her in heroes/summon other characters in engage(biggest game original character from the gacha that has gives Nintendo tons of money)
>>
>>730890770
While there are valid choices, the issue is that any potential Fire Emblem antagonist character is competing with the generic protagonist from the newest game.

I hope the next Smash roster cuts everything back down to the basics. No characters like Sora or Snake, only Nintendo characters with the only third-parties being characters that are significant to Nintendo’s history like Sonic.

Everything you said is correct anon. However, you have to consider the mind of a Smashfag. They are asking for Doom Guy to be in (which then becomes "Why Doom Guy will 100% be in Smash") is because they see Smash now as a "Celebration of Gaming". And if you live in the US, then what legendary series is there but Doom. Again, that's probably not even going to cross the minds of Japanese developers, but these people aren't even considering that.

This is also why Smash Discussion has died post Ultimate. Ultimate got pretty much every major pick people had that seemed impossible. It was only the game before this one when we finally got Megaman. Then you add Castlevania, FF, Minecraft, Dragon Quest, several fighting games, and Banjo and Sora. There really isn't anyone left. Do you license out one character people might like just to keep doing it, and do you attempt to bring all these series back with their own licensing and DLC messes when the roster is as big as it is? There is no more place to go with "Everyone is Here" and "Celebration of Gaming". And given how Nintendo is, they'd rather have the series celebrate their own games or shove an open world in it than continuing to add random third party series. There is a reason Ultimate is called Special. The next game will be nothing like it.

The majority of "creative" Smash characters and their gimmicks end up being bad for the game, useless, or both:
>Ice Climbers
Without even addressing wobbling, every iteration of ICs has been in the "useless" category. The technical skill required to play ICs optimally is so, so misaligned with Smash's accessible design.
>Rosalina
Easily one of the most interesting characters they've ever designed, but she was insanely fucking lame in 4. No one liked Rosalina (except Dabuz).
>Robin
Rare example of a good, creative zoner. He's only frustrating to fight due to Smash's input delay and bad, delay-based netcode.
>Little Mac
Little Mac isn't good, but the issue is that he's an archetype that's a fighting game developer's worst nightmare: rapes bad players, gets raped by good players. KO Punch is also a terribly designed mechanic, as it grinds the game state to a halt.
>Ryu, Ken
Auto-turnaround is fundamentally broken, as is access to consistent combos and kill confirms in a game full of characters with access to neither, by design
>Cloud('s Limit)
Cloud himself isn't a very creative character, it's Limit that's the issue. To its credit, Ultimate toned Limit down to a much more reasonable level.
>Bayonetta
Witch Time and another issue re: combos and kill confirms. While Ultimate also toned Bayonetta down, she's still frustrating to fight.

Ultimate characters in another post, I guess.
>>
>>730892056
>Inkling('s ink)
I'm tempted to say that this is a positive example of a creative gimmick, but this character effectively fell off the face of the earth after roller was nerfed. In the end, it feels like Inkling is forced to ink opponents to do what other characters can do for free, exacerbating her inability to kill.
>Simon
Another positive example of a creative gimmick, but unfortunately he's necessarily bad because he'd be too frustrating to play against otherwise.
>K. Rool
The belly armor gimmick is useless and basically irrelevant to the rest of his kit.

As for the DLC character, no one needs to go into those. Hero is the only good one.
>>
>>730883612
>irrelevant, one-off villain from a game released in 2000

Skull Kid was also in Twilight princess
>>
>>730894946
That's a different character, thoughbeit. Or rather, he was downgraded back to regular enemy / NPC, like he was in OoT.
>>
>rosterfag got banned
lol

>>730891124
I sincerely hope Smash 6 is just, like, a fun party game with a smaller roster or something. I'm so tired of Sakurai's sanitized version of semi-competitive-but-not-really Smash. I'd gladly play a Nintendo version of Power Stone or something at this point. The damage that Ultimate did to the prerelease hype cycle of Smash cannot be undone.
