He's there to idiot poof the game so you aren't wandering around lost for hours, and in the case of 4, they did a superb job of idiot proofing games because I did not need to consult a guide at all for item collection because they included the scout bots. Which was a superb quality of life addition.
The downside is they did a bit too good of a job since he'll instantly tell you the answer, as opposed to how they did it in the first 3 prime games where you're allowed to wander around a bit before the game goes 'Go here retard'.

And it's pretty clear 4 needed a lot more polish, but after needing to restart production twice and needing the game to be a launch title for the Switch 2, Nintendo told Retro to just get the game out. For the parts of the game that are good, it's pretty clear Retro is still a very competent game dev.
