Has any series actually benefited from going from linear design to an open world? I can't recall any example where it hasn't been a downgrade.

MGSV makes each mission feel like an actual spec ops mission instead of a corridor you can run through in 30 seconds
>>730898291Mario 64, if that counts as open world. I'm not saying it's better than SMB3 or SMW, but it's their equal, so I'd say it was a benefit to experiment with the new design.
>>730898779Instead it's an empty open area you can run through in 10 minutes.
>See this image on /v/, get genuinely tempted to buy Code Vein 2 and enjoy it on release >Remember it's open-world now because of Elden Ring>All urge to buy dies Just the effect of that alone leaves me puzzled why gooner designs isn't pushed more, it's such easy fucking money from idiots like me.
>>730898794>if that counts as open world. Not really. I feel most of the levels are far too tiny for that. Bowser's Fury is the only truly open world Mario platformer.
>>730898779Wrong, instead it's an open area with nothing in it except the same 5 urban areas you go through repeatedly and theres also no story because its all stuffed away inside of the stupid cassette tapes
>>730898779Spec ops missions of empty nothingness. Konami forcing them to make PS3 and X360 versions sabotaged any potential that the open world might've had.
>>730899419The only reason to go through the same areas repeatedly is for the entirely optional side missions. The main story makes excellent use of each location.
>>730899531Except when Chapter 2 forces you to revisit old areas repeatedly in order to unlock new missions that progress the story.
IMO the best missions in MGSV are the ones that take 20 minutes to complete all tasks. Backup Backdown is my favorite, you genuinely feel like a legendary one man army if you do it right https://youtu.be/yz9_bEoa8Kk I think playing Death Stranding on foot gives a similar feeling of satisfaction when you finally turn the delivery in at the end. You just dont get that feeling when you rush the game using vehicles.
>>730899824I still think calling it "Chapter 2" was a mistake. The main story ends after Skull Face is dead. Calling it "Epilogue" would have drastically cut down on the complaints about it being unfinished.
>>730898291MGSV has the best gameplay in the franchise. It's just that Kojima is a retarded hack and wasted the money and dev time meant for fleshing out the world, finishing the story, making companions evolve over time, etc
>>730899824You arent forced to do that at all. You can just use your cigar to pass the time required
>>730900016I remember after skullface thinking the game was over and then this played and I actually yelled holy shit https://youtu.be/FF0cxrCXI28
>>730900108All the Chapter 2 main missions require you to complete other missions to unlock them. You don't get them just for passing time. You may remind yourself of this by checking out pretty much any comprehensive guide for the game.
>>730898653You can hardly even call Revolver and Redemption part of the same series.
>>730898291GTA
>>730902956GTA has been open world since the first game.
>>730898291Zelda and I wish they would apply the design to 3d Mario as well
>>730898291god that art style is fucking amazing
