Most developers these days make open world games and I'm so done with them. Even if they weren't abundant, Elden Ring's open world isn't that good. What's worse is that the legacy dungeons, the sections that supposed to play like a traditional Fromsoft title aren't that good either. Too many box shaped rooms with tons of stairs going nowhere. This isn't level design, it's just corridors that lead to annoying enemies to fight.

ER and DS3 just have the most fun, most fast paced combat. The exploration and interconnectivity of DS1 hardly matters on a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th playthrough, and serves just as a way to get certain pieces of gear early. DS2 is the worst of all worlds given that it has less interconnectivity than 1 while having a lot of issues. I still liked DS2, but I could feel the jank more than even 1.Oh yeah, it also goes without saying that ER/SotE kind of retroactively harms the earlier Souls games due to difficulty. I swear in DS1 if you buff a thrusting sword you can kill most bosses in like under 30 seconds while ignoring all of their moves. Obviously that is not fair to the earlier games as if they could have known, but it is just the truth. Going back to DS1 I was shocked at how little I died to any of the bosses. Most of my deaths were environmental (just falling off of shit, missing jumps, etc).

To split a hair, Elden Ring isn't really a Miyazaki entry. It was Tanimura, the Dark Souls 2 director, who oversaw a large chunk of the initial development.And that's also a large part of the reason why Elden Ring is a bad game.
