How is it that this game is so amazing and yet every time they try and make a sequel (even when they get the original developers) it ends up as hot garbage?

Woolly World was great, at least. But the brass at Nintendo seems to think Yoshi is for babies, so they make juvenile games with soulless music for them. No clue how Story and Woolly World ended up good. The latter can be attributed to GoodFeel being a soulful dev team, I suppose.

It was a flash in the pan. Only the 90s could've pulled of a story book art style with an epic final boss rocking out to fucking SNES metal. Modern era could NEVER have that attitude.

Because they don't utilize similar feeling gameplay. Every single game after this, including Woolly World, gets egg throwing and Yoshi's movement speed wrong.

Woolly World was the closest. I trust Good Feel to try it again, even if Crafted World has some things about it that are eh. Otherwise, a dev like HAL Labs be a good fit for Yoshi.

I've liked the Yoshi games. Woolly World and Crafted World are fun. They're not outstanding or anything but they're clever and charming. They scratch a similar itch as Kirby to me.

I actually think Yoshi's Story is the closest, through obviously not as good. The way every level is full of new mechanics and surprises, including weird mechanics that are only used in a single room of a single level, really reminds me of the creative energy that Island had.

I feel like the perception of story would be very different if it wasn't designed in such a weird way. Most people aren't going to try and 100% the game, they are just going to do one play through and come to the conclusion that the game is shallow and short.

It's the only good YI sequel. Inventive use of the yarn gimmick, good level design, 11/10 aesthetic and an actual great OST.

Coming off of the momentum of great mario games like SMB3, Mario World. And there was a new cat in town: Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong Country basically mogged the shit out of everyone, so this was Nintendo's answer to make a game that was graphically more impressive, but with a different art style. It came out very late in the SNES's life and was one of three games to utilize the FX Chip 2, which allowed for a lot of fancy 3D graphics, but for this game was mostly used to transform, rotate, and scale sprites, as well as those crazy ass fucking backgrounds on the touch fuzzy get dizzy level.

Technical achievements aside, the art style is iconic and you don't normally see such thick outlines in pixel art games. It was really trying to be something unique, and it was. It can be difficult to try and recapture that energy, but what's important was Nintendo was feeling like they were getting outdone by western competition with Donkey Kong Country's feats on the SNES. That kind of competition and rivalry, oneupsmanship and trying to outdo each other is important, but obviously there were some seasoned vets on the project too.

Oh and not to mention, this was on the advent of the next generation, PS1, 3D graphics. Nintendo had to make a statement to make a standout title, and the visuals went a long way towards making delivering that experience in a time when a lot of developers and the public were becoming wowed by 3D graphics and trying to move away from pixelart/sprites.

It's so great because it had an all-star development team that was really trying their best to make a swan song for the SNES. That's why it's so good.
