Prime 4 really spoiled me with its controls and gunplay and boss fights. Prime 1 certainly has interesting level design, but I honestly do miss the viola bike a little bit. I just wish they did more with it. What are your thoughts on this subseries?

I very much enjoyed super and zero mission as action games even in spite of their issues with meh difficulty, weak bosses, super's floatiness, etc, in fact they had unique appeal for me in that area specifically. the combination of that with all the obvious structural interest of a metroid game made them a very strong package. metroid prime was a big compromise, the action component was something I had to stomach so the metroidvania elements could work.
