I never cared for it. The shooting is bad, the level design is overly gimmicky and the sci-fi slavic police state shithole setting does nothing for me. It just felt like a tech demo for the source engine.

Anon, I...

>The shooting is bad
this was the biggest wtf moment for me coming from HL1 which was really fun. had completely different expectations considering HL2 is considered the better game
>>
>>730911769
I think its fine, but has very poor pacing, vehicle levels are ass.

Crysis is a tech demo while also being a fun game.

Is there a word for genre-setting art's sphere of influence becoming so large that it's achievements are unidentifiable to people in the future?
Like kids listening to Pink Floyd now and not understanding they invented surround sound and created music completely alien to almost everything before them, but now everything has it?
You will not understand this game's achievements in physics, facial animation, NPC AI, light and color rendering/shaders, destructible environments and story telling because every game now is down-stream from it. Pop open some games from 2003 and then play the game.
>>
>>730912352
no, i played them last year

what happens if you drop the contrarian retard act and make a post saying you like half life 2?

Great.
>>
>>730912338
HL2 was more fun than Crysis and the Source engine still has the most entertaining physics to date.

HL1 and 2 have the same issue with their shooting: enemies don't react to being shot except on death. Its only a bit more noticeable of a problem in 2 because the pistol and smg do less damage per shot but have a faster firing rate making bullets feel less powerful even though it actually evens out in TTK.
>>
>>730912810
That’s incredibly dishonest.
>>
>>730911891
The pistol is inaccurate as shit and feels like shooting a popgun, and not a particularly fun one.
Smg in 1 was bad too, but at least it had a nice feel to it. The smg in 2 feels like you're using a leaky, piss filled water gun.
There are more things to complain about but those are the two worst offenders, because you're constantly given ammo for them and are essentially forced to use them whenever you run out of shotgun shells. Overall all guns getting their ammo reserve, accuracy and damage gutted for the sake of muh grav gun really did NOT do this game any favors. And the fact that you're shooting the same mask wearing niggas ALL GAME. Even the antlions are boring to fight because they're just a respawning stage hazard. Fucking zombies are the highlight when it comes to fun enemy design, and they're just +forward +attack simpletons lifted straight out of the previous game.
Not to mention all the other stuff like decreased walking speed, SHIT armor system, boring uninspired concrete corridors, the ammo crates actively checking your health/ammo count before dropping anything, etc.

Half Life 2 is the best example of games as art I have seen in my life, and I have been playing games longer than most of you have been alive. And even back then I was a hardcore gamer. That dedication has only grown stronger with age. To the blasted depths the beast doth make his own abode, the notion that my reflexes will prove my downfall. Because I will always be one step ahead on any game. And I mean that, because I never play against anyone until I have mastered the game by myself. Not with buddy locally. Not online. But when I emerge from my training, there's not one "fast twitch" youngster I can't make my bitch.
>>
>>730912985
I distinctly remember bullsquids and houndeyes getting surprised if you attack them first, marines and vorts running for cover if hurt, and while technically not enemies and not even for being hurt, scientists covering in fear if you shoot near them. And they also had that "betrayed" reaction if you do cause damage.
In hl2 combine straight up just don't break out of their theatrical "flanking" behavior even if they're accidentally "flanking" right into your sightline. And citizens(particularly unarmed ones) comically don't give half a shit about you unloading firearms next to them, in part because you just can't hurt them. They turn towards you because you're a source of noise but they don't even interrupt their idle animation. Ruins immersion.
>>
>>730912985
>HL1 and 2 have the same issue with their shooting
actually hl2 has an additional issue of the guns just not feeling good to shoot. they don't have that oomph to them that they do in hl1, making the shooting not feel as good for me. doesn't make hl2 a bad game just not as good as 1
>>
>>730911769
The shooting was good but then Valve fucked with it for multiplayer balance

Here's hoping they'll break the curse in HL3. It'll be so fucked if Valve managed to bungle the gunplay again. They have all the lessons over the years from other FPS games, not to mention the technical advancements in game development to be able to have the cake and eat it too when it comes to adding features. There are no more excuses for a studio that's supposed to be revolutionary like Valve is.
>>
Couldn't they have made at least 2 skins for the zombies?
>>
>>730911769
Yeah I've always liked Half Life 1 more

The Citizen Kane syndrome. It also happened to HL1, even if anons itt won't accept it. Some people that don't like HL1 just don't get it. Complaining about how it isn't outstanding in any way, specially considering games that released later.
>>
All of my best memorys from this game had nothing to do with the game itself honestly. The best part about this was HL2:DM and all the maps and unique gamemodes people made. some of the best times i had was finding friends i made on those weird prop based climbing maps and going on pub crawls just finding weird shit people had created. like that one map with the mech that was destructible.

yeah, this was oversold and the acclamation it gets is weird. even cry of fear and vindictus did more with the engine. you know what I'll say it. its nothing but a cult.

Yes. Tech demos are super boring to play after the initial impression and people usually drop it and never come back. Also zero replayability
>>
>>730912604
I played Half Life 2 on release and didn't like it, the physics were impressive but didn't magically make me love the game, I was just as impressed by Max Payne 2.

Well actually, I think Ocarina had many unique system we still use tod... oh, right it's the other thread /v/ always has. Whoops.

Gravity gun slop. Tech demo. Uh, headcrab slop? Did I miss anything?

HL1 is amazing, like actually insanely good.
HL2 is trash.
HL2e1 is pretty good.
HL2e2 is fun and good.

FEAR released just a year later and has aged way better
>>
>It just felt like a tech demo for the source engine
This is what happens when you play a game after 20 years of other games iterating on all of its features.
>>
>>730911769
>It just felt like a tech demo for the source engine.
source engine exists to support half-life 2. valve develops the latest version of their engine for public use solely to allow for their latest half-life title to be as good as possible, and then they only use the engine for meme games like counterstrike until the next half-life game.
>>
>>730911769
I'm currently going through it for the first time. Halfway through Episode 2, will probably finish it today.
It's fun.

>>730929737
You're in for a treat, the White Forest finale is still one of the best set piece missions in any shooter. Hope you're ready to kiss emotional closure goodbye though, because that's where the timeline just... ends.

Honestly that's the main reason why I put it off for so long. Played HL1 but didn't want to join the wait train so I never picked up 2 for a long time.
I did it out of a whim and blitzed through the game. It's very good. I can see how it got as big as it did. Feels nice to play a tightly-knit campaign like this. Maybe I'll check the DM servers afterward, if they are still alive.
>>
>>730912604
Hell many modern games today can't even match it.
Facial animations, NPC AI and physics are a lost art.
>>
>>730918057
>Quake III, we're back to the tech demo gain
God what a retard. Q3A was some of the best multiplayer shooters of the time and Quake's gameplay was good if not for some badly designed levels (especially in chapter 1 and 3)
>>
>>730918057
The fucking irony.
>>
>>730911769
Very overhyped game back then. Same thing happened with HL2.
>>
>>730918057
In the 90s, nearly all games were tech demos - good game design (and good games) tended to emerge organically from craftsmanship from a team of skilled developers.
I would argue that starting with the 360/PS3, the industry has become the mirror image of the 90s with too much focus on univ-trained designers, and not enough craftsmanship.
